STEVE McClaren walked away from Nottingham Forest after seeing his requests to sign four different loan players rejected over the past week.

The former England boss quit his role at the City Ground after only 111 days, after becoming frustrated at what he regarded as a lack of backing in the transfer market.

While, on a dramatic evening, chairman Nigel Doughty then announced that he would step down from his role at the end of the season, although he will retain his financial backing of the club.

"I resigned," said McClaren. "The club do not share the ambition I came here for."

McClaren, who has agreed to leave without a payoff, is understood to have lined up moves for two wingers, in the form of Wolves' Michael Kightly and Leicester's Lloyd Dyer, as well as two further potential signings, in the wake of the 5-1 hammering at Burnley.

But he decided the job was not the one he had been sold, after seeing his latest efforts to bolster his City Ground squad blocked.

And, amid an hour-long meeting with Doughty and chief executive Mark Arthur, after Birmingham had hit three goals in 12 minutes to subject Forest to a third straight home defeat, McClaren tended his resignation.

McClaren had previously voiced his frustration at seeing the 'financial parameters' within which he is expected to work change dramatically, during the ten games he was in charge.

Having seen the club pursue – and fail to sign – the likes of Jermaine Beckford, Max Gradel, Nicky Maynard, Wayne Routledge and Wes Verhoek before the transfer window slammed shut, McClaren had reacted angrily and warned that the club lacked the strength in depth to challenge in the Championship.

But the club is determined to adhere to the financial fair play rules that could be introduced as early as next season and refused to gamble by stretching the club's wage bill further.

"I feel sorry for Steve McClaren, he has been made promises that have been broken," said Forest legend Kenny Burns. "There are only two people higher than the manager at the club and they have let him down badly.

"I am not really surprised, at seeing this. The players he was promised have not materialised."

Garry Birtles echoed those sentiments, saying: "McClaren was clearly told something else when he had his interview and I don't blame him for walking.

"It is unacceptable. Billy Davies will be laughing himself to sleep. If there is no money available, why didn't the chairman just say so, instead of pulling the wool over people's eyes?"

The financial fair play rules are a fantastic excuse for chairmen aren't they? As if signing Lloyd Dyer on loan breaks the bank. Jesus.

Mcclaren isn't a coward, a coward would have quit football after being shown up in the England job. Steve has done the opposite and shown he is a man of substance, and now? Good sense as well!!!
