Trav Le Bleu Posted 5 October 2011 Posted 5 October 2011 At the risk of sounding thick.... With a broken neck, does it disfigure the body at all? Such as a broken ankle would? Nooooooooooo, have you never heard of Bert Trautmann? Cos you should have. One of the most remarkable football stories ever! He played in goal for Man City in the 1956 FA Cup final, the last 15 mins with a broken neck. The Football Career of Bert Trautmann. With City leading 3-1 after 73 minutes, Trautmann averted a near-certain goal when he dived at the feet of Birmingham centre-forward Peter Murphy, and was knocked unconscious even while he held on to the ball in a vice-like grip. It would be three days before an X-ray showed he had played the final 17 minutes with a broken neck and that he was remarkably lucky to be alive."When I came to, lying on the pitch with City trainer Laurie Burnett waving smelling salts under my nose, the pain was incredible. I couldn't see properly, it was as though I was standing in thick fog and remember very little of the rest of the game or receiving my medal from the Queen." Concussed and reeling like a drunk, Trautmann pulled off three further stunning saves, "none of which I can remember, though I can picture team-mate Bill Leivers helping me up the steps to the Royal Box. Men were men then.
lcfcadam Posted 5 October 2011 Posted 5 October 2011 This is obviously going to replayed and the Accrington boss has said he'll agree to let Tranmere score from kick off. Now...... can you remember how you felt 2nd time round at the City Ground when Paul Smith trotted down the pitch and bagged after the Clive Clarke episode? Yeah you were gutted you'd not known about the agreement and had a monkey on Paul Smith first g/scorer. The smart money is on fon Williams (Tranmeres No. 1) to be allowed to knock one in from kick off so remember to get your cash lumped on as the return will be large. All 1st goalscorer bets are voided and refunded in situations such as this, I'm sure of it.

Was a German paratrooper too, if I remember correctly?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 5 October 2011 Posted 5 October 2011 Was a German paratrooper too, if I remember correctly? He was - POW who stayed in England after the war.
Jimothy Posted 5 October 2011 Posted 5 October 2011 Just noticed the original report about the game being abandoned was written by a Karen Fazackerley. Wonder if she's any relation to our own Derek?
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 All 1st goalscorer bets are voided and refunded in situations such as this, I'm sure of it. Mine weren't against Forest.

When our game with Forest was replayed, both managers said after that they chose Smith to score the goal because nobody would have had him as first goalscorer. Not sure about the Accrington v Tranmere match though

Not sure about the Accrington v Tranmere match though Ah right I see. Tbh if I was the bookie I'd feel the only fair thing to do in these kind of situations is refund all 1st goalscorer bets - would be much simpler. After hearing that I'm now getting tempted to lump a few quid on their number one...
Dylan Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 Pretty sure bookies would be as aware as us, and wouldn't give stupid odds for their goalie as first goalscorer!
BoneDog Posted 6 October 2011 Posted 6 October 2011 It's good to hear this lad is out of hospital. I felt a bit sick when I heard the first reports, it sounded like it was gonna be a bad injury that might end his career.
