AKCJ Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 I've always thought it should be the captains job to calm his players during a game. Mills has never pulled someone away from an incident like that and Drogba didn't do it yesterday. Thats all it takes to avoid those silly bookings.
dannythefox Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 When a big black 6.6" bloke throws a wobbler with his long dangly arms its looks worse than it is hence why he always gets booked. (I'm not racist)
Zingari Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 Maybe it’s my conspiratorial mind working overtime but sometimes I think there are laws in the game that are purposefully ambiguous. Or at least the ref’s interpretation of the law can be justified either way in many circumstances . I’ve seen loads of occasions where players have been obviously showing dissent and the ref seems to have chosen to ignore it. Other times they reach for cards with what seems undue haste. Another example is the “tackle from behind”. I’m fairly sure that when Suarez was tackled by a Man Utd defender from behind in the game on Saturday that although it looked as though the defender got the ball, but he also took Suarez too . I’m pretty sure that Matt Mills got sent off for almost a carbon copy tackle. It seems to me as though the ref can easily pick and choose when to be forceful in many incidents As I say though, this may be just my tendentious view.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 Howard is the worst at outbursts, hence the sending off at Palace.

I think what happens is when the rules are brought in and both your examples are newish they are enforced vigorously but over time get diluted due to media/pundit criticisms, the tackle from behind was initially punished whether you got the ball or not now it's more often than not only if you don't get the ball or you've already made your presence felt by the ref. I think PL players get away with abusing and swearing at the officials a lot more because of the media attention they get if it results in a player getting red carded (2 yellows) and public ear bashings from managers especially the likes of Fergy, Rooney could be carded for swearing at official in virtually every game he plays imagine what that would do to Fergy. On the whole I think you're correct hence the calls of inconsistency.

But still think this so called "inconsistency" can at times seem all a little too convenient . Watching the African cup last night i was amazed when Bamba was allowed to retake a penalty because the goalkeeper had moved . I can't remember this happening for a very long time and it seems to me the goalkeepers move for virtually every penalty without being penalised . I just got the feeling that the ref was loading the scales while keeping within the laws. I will say again that i have a very untrusting nature though

I will say again that i have a very untrusting nature though I often feel the same so do many fans of the underdog team and there's certainly been plenty of example of the big team getting the benefit of any doubt being shown. I often felt it during our successful MON era when we were playing the 'big' teams and I'm sure many of the L1 teams felt it when we played them.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 Quite a decent thread this one lol Don't you just love pre-emtive text/ auto correction and the likes of me that can't spell :-)
acooling08 Posted 13 February 2012 Posted 13 February 2012 Bamba was bloody lucky yesterday, missed his penalty but it was retaken
Guest ttfn Posted 14 February 2012 Posted 14 February 2012 In Jonathan Wilson's team of the tournament for ACON. But that must be wrong, because he's shit, right?
