davieG Posted 15 May 2012 Posted 15 May 2012 BBC Nine new 20mph zones in Leicester have been approved - but much of the funding still has to be found. Eight of the schemes are near schools and seven include traffic calming measures such as speed bumps. They range in size from a single road - Sandhurst in Newfoundpool - to 44 streets around Harrison Road. The city council has a £100,000 annual budget for the works but said it would seek developer funding to help with the estimated £850,000 cost. Residents' support Other zones include 17 roads in the Aylestone village area, 11 in Humberstone Village and 21 in Bradgate Heights. Three schemes will focus specifically on school areas, including 12 roads around St Mary's Fields Infants School in Rowley Fields, 15 around Woodstock Primary School in Beaumont Leys, and 24 around Mowmacre Hill Primary School area. A council spokesman said: "It is hoped the 20mph zones will lead to fewer, less severe road traffic accidents, and encourage more cycling or walking. "Residents in each of the areas were involved in the design of the schemes, and strongly supported the proposed ideas." Merc Hundreds of thousands of pounds are to be spent on creating 20mph zones in 182 city streets. The two-year project, which will cover nine areas of the city, was announced by the city council yesterday. Officers have set aside £200,000 of council cash for the project, which is set to cost a maximum of £800,000 – with the rest coming from the contributions developers make when they build in the city. In most of the chosen streets, traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps or signs will be installed to encourage drivers to slow down. The areas are: the Sandhurst Road area, in Newfoundpool; the St Matthew's area; roads surrounding St Mary's Field Infant School in Rowley Fields; roads around Woodstock Primary School in Stocking Farm; the Aylestone Village area; roads around Mowmacre Hill Primary School in Mowmacre; streets off Harrison Road in Rushey Mead; the Bradgate Heights housing development in Beaumont Leys and roads in Humberstone Village. There were in total 48 minor and eight serious accidents on the chosen roads between 2008 and 2010. Residents in affected streets will be consulted in the coming months, and it is hoped that some schemes could be up and running by the end of the year.
stourbridgefox Posted 15 May 2012 Posted 15 May 2012 When I was around 19-20 I used to drive past my old school on my RD350 YPVS at 100 mph...for some reason. It was quite scary as there was a corner I had to take at around 50mph to carry enough speed to make 100mph before I had to break for a roundabout. If anyone was crossing the road or if there was any other traffic then it ruined the fun. I am now much wiser and more sensible! Most of the time I don't get above 20mph in Leicester anyway. Traffic is pretty bad.

Saxondale Posted 15 May 2012 Posted 15 May 2012 Guess how the scheme will be paid for in the long run...
stourbridgefox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 Only a madman would chose to ride a two-stroke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The RD350 made me into a madman. The powerband was addictive. I'm far more sensible now.
Zingari Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 That's pretty while towing a caravan i think it's because i keep stopping to nick lead off church roofs that's made my average speed so low!
