Jimmy Posted 9 July 2005 Posted 9 July 2005 Matt Piper has signed a new deal until 2008 at sunderland. according to the sun he feels he has a point to prove. If he can get back to the form he showed here the premiership left backs could be in a bit of trouble
Hitesh Posted 9 July 2005 Posted 9 July 2005 I think that the injury he got has affected his career. I doubt he will ever be as good as he was. It was a shame he had to leave Leicester, but i guess we wouldnt be here if he hadnt left. I do hope though that he does get back into first team football because he deserves it.
Guest Posted 9 July 2005 Posted 9 July 2005 What is it? Nearly 3 years out of the game? Good luck to him, I say.

Anish Posted 9 July 2005 Posted 9 July 2005 I can't believe Sunderland actually offered him a new deal to be honest, but all the best to the lad. He deserves a break and I hope he shows his promise and steers clear of the treatment table.
Shum Posted 13 July 2005 Posted 13 July 2005 Bit of a bizarre deal... Matt Piper has agreed a one-year contract extension at Sunderland - for no extra money. The Black Cats man has penned a new deal that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until June 2008. The winger, who jetted off to Canada on Sunderland's pre-season tour this morning, has spread the existing terms of his current deal over an extra year. Piper has endured an injury-hit three years on Wearside, playing just 24 games since signing from Leicester in August 2002. He said: "The last year has been difficult for me personally but the club has been extremely supportive as I've worked to overcome my injury. "They have provided expert medical care and first-class rehab. This is my chance to repay the faith and support that the club has shown in me and to show the Sunderland fans how much I appreciate their support. "I am settled at Sunderland, and to be able to pledge my long-term future as the club returns to the top flight is great. I'm looking forward to playing my part in the Premiership campaign." McCarthy had no qualms about naming Piper in a 21-man squad for Sunderland's pre-season tour to Canada and the United States. Piper has worked all summer for a chance to prove himself and the Black Cats boss hopes to see the winger play a big part on the tour as Sunderland prepare for their Premiership campaign. McCarthy said: "There is no question over Matt's ability - he is a player of proven quality. "He has worked tremendously hard with our medical staff to overcome his knee problem and hopefully we can now all look forward to seeing the best of him." Piper's decision to mushroom his current deal over an extra year is unusual in football. Sunderland's chief executive Peter Walker said: "In simple terms, the salary that Matt would have earned in the remaining two years of his contract will now be spread over three years. "This agreement is something that is quite possibly unique in football and it is a tribute to Matt's integrity and character that he has chosen to extend his contract with the Club with no financial benefit to himself whatsoever."
Ricey Posted 13 July 2005 Posted 13 July 2005 I just hope one day Matty Piper becomes clear of injuries and returns back home to City where he belongs
Scow Posted 13 July 2005 Posted 13 July 2005 I'm sure the Sunderland fans will appreciate what he's attempting to do. He'll play a big part for Sunderland next season if he gets back to full fitness.

Babylon Posted 13 July 2005 Posted 13 July 2005 Fair play to him... bet he is on a fair old wedge anyway!!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 July 2005 Posted 13 July 2005 I wonder if Lee Morris has taken note? 137263[/snapback] We don't want him bothering the medical staff til 2008 though, even on the same amount of money. Good luck to Matty by the way, it was truly exciting to see a Leicester-born kid rip through Premiership defences in his first few senior appearances. I hope his injuries are behind him to a large extent and hopefully one day he will return to us, after a successful period away. Don't forget, this was the lad who scored the last ever league goal at Filbert Street, a match-winner right in front of the Kop.
