pSinatra Posted 29 June 2012 Posted 29 June 2012 We have an old battered classical, I think I'm going to try it out on that (I'm aware it's not the same as a proper acoustic but it's going to save me £100) and see how I do. I'm sure it'll sound like death scratching his own arsehole but it'll do until I feel I can actually play to a standard that needs better. You might find this interesting............well worth a pluck!!
Rincewind Posted 29 June 2012 Posted 29 June 2012 Don't do what the Who did with the guitars they had. Quadrophenia is on at 10pm. Doc about it now. There is a list of the 10 most expensive guitars here if you have the cash.
Rincewind Posted 30 June 2012 Posted 30 June 2012 http://www.sueryderc...egory/169/Music You can buy guitars here. Heres a nice one. They have them in City blue as well.
Ozwin Posted 30 June 2012 Author Posted 30 June 2012 So far I have learned the chords of D (piece of piss) and A (my fingers!) It's been a slow process.
Rincewind Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 I'll see if the shop I may be working at has any of the retro ones. They may only have them on line. The LCFC guitar.
The Doctor Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 So far I have learned the chords of D (piece of piss) and A (my fingers!) It's been a slow process. I ****ing hate A chord - really awkward bugger. G and C are even easier than D though.
Guest Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 I'm pretty good on the air guitar. I can get hold of one pretty cheap for you if you're willing to pay a finders fee.
Rincewind Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Had a look in the Samaratans shop on Granby street. They have an app that is connected to a MP3 player. Dont know if it works without. Thinkits an air guitar. Says on the box play along to your fav songs.
Guest Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 Alreet folks. I'm looking to add another to my collection (Fender Jag, Gretch Electromatic, Takamine EN10C) and was looking at the Fender USA Special Strat HSS (Humbucker/Single/Single). Anyone got one and has an opinion on it?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 Not got one but am a fan of Fenders generally. The American special is a budget version of the USA Standard isn't it? Had a quick look and the reviews for this range are pretty good generally, but whether they're good value is hard to say - depends how much you can get one for. One I saw (it wasn't the HSS one admittedly) said the quality and build was as good, but not much better than a Mexican, whereas another said they weren't far off the proper American ones. Have you had a go on one? Hadn't realised how expensive new guitars are generally at the minute - exchange rate and inflation haven't been doing buyers any favours it would seem. I bought one of my USA Standard Teles 11 years ago new for £550 (during a phase when they were cheaper, admittedly) which seems like a right old bargain now
Rincewind Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 Got some nice ones in Sheehans on London Road. Not a guitar but I've bought a Harmonica off Ebay on a whim. Also saw a nice clarinet on the market yesterday. Think it was £40. Wish I could play one.

I'm off to test some out tomorrow but as you say it's an expensive time to be buying compared to a few years back. I love Teles and got a few mates with them. I always associate them with a big kind of raucous rock/blues sound. What kinda stuff do you play on it? Will report back on my findings tomorrow afternoon from the Strats
The Year Of The Fox Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 What happened to Academy of Sound in Leicester?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 Yeah they're a slightly cheaper version of the Standard but I'm looking for something with the versatility of tone which is why I'm interested in the HSS/HSH with 1/2 humbuckers. I always associate them with a big kind of raucous rock/blues sound. What kinda stuff do you play on it? Will report back on my findings tomorrow afternoon from the Strats One of my two telecasters was bought off ebay and then I had a humbucker fitted to it in the neck position, as the standard tele neck pick up is a bit of a non-event. It should in theory be easy to do something similar with a Strat, as depending on the model a lot of them are already routed for a humbucker in the bridge position. There is a genuine Fender Strat pickguard for this configuration (available in sexy tortoiseshell, my favourite) so it's just a matter of finding a humbucker that will fit (a Fender one will make life easier) and someone that knows how to wire it up. There isn't a genuine tele pickguard for what I wanted, and it was a massive pain in the arse finding someone to make one but eventually I did find someone that could do a decent job. I reckon you might even be able to do this with a second hand USA Standard and it cost less than the one you're looking at and potentially be a better instrument. Being this into guitars you'd think I'd be good at playing them, but this is of course not the case. I've just spent the last 18 years doing bad Bernard Butler/Johnny Marr/Burt Jansch impersonations and failing miserably to come up with anything worthwhile of my own What happened to Academy of Sound in Leicester? Went through various guises before going down the pan. Another shop killed at least in part by the internet - it's good that Intasound and Sheehans still manage to keep going though
Uncle Phil Posted 3 July 2013 Posted 3 July 2013 I've heard good things about the USA specials but like you say reviews do vary. All you can do is go and try them out and see which floats your boat. Compare it against a Mexican and if you can a USA standard. I know a lot of people on the internet that talk down the Mex's purely because the aren't made in the US, but they're some great guitars. I don't actually own any Fenders but I do love the play of a Tele. I also really want a Fender Roadhouse Strat with the Texas special pickups so I can stick a feather in my cap and be Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Guest Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Has anybody ever brought a new guitar back from the US before? Off to California in October and depending on the exchange rate/import tax may see if I can pick myself up a bargain.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 No, but I know someone who used to do it regularly, albeit a long time ago. Just took all the tags off and carried it as hand luggage. Surely they'd be too big for that now, though?
Uncle Phil Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 I'd always thought if you took all tags off etc and say it was already yours you'd get away with it. Never tried though.

Never tried though.Yeah I've heard of people doing it that way too. Thing is if I'm out there I could well be picking up a used guitar rather than a brand new one so at least it wouldn't look brand new going through customs.@Bellend yeah definitely too big for hand luggage restrictions these days

Let us know how you get on, for future ref
Guest Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 After trying a variety of Strats out this morning I'm most fond of playing the American Standard but really liking the idea of a humbucker so the American Standard HSS looks like it could be the one for me. Hopefully will head to try one out later in the week

Hopefully will head to try one out later in the week I bought a HSS Strat fairly recently (http://www.musicjunkie.co.uk/product/Fender-Modern-Player-Stratocaster-Olympic-White-RW/ this one, to be precise) and I think it's excellent. I wanted something that was versatile, so I could play pretty much any genre I fancied, and it seems to be doing the trick. At first I was playing mellow Red Hot Chili Peppers songs on it, but currently I've got it in Drop B playing Stone Sour and Slipknot, and it does the job on both! Can't really ask for much more versatility than that. Obviously you may be more into a specific style, so that may not bother you as much, but it's a great guitar, regardless. Really nice to play, too.

I tried the American Deluxe too this morning but it was infinitely harder work to play (which admittedly may have been down to the way it was set up) but I much preferred the standard. Edit: actually I'm back in Leicester next week so that would be worth trying out while I'm there. Where's the store Adam?
