Remember SMALL FACES?
Small Faces were a band founded in 1965 by members Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones, and Jimmy Winston, although by 1966 Winston was replaced by Ian McLagan as the band's keyboardist.
The band is remembered as one of the most acclaimed and influential mod groups of the 1960s. With memorable hit songs such as "Itchycoo Park", "Lazy Sunday", "All or Nothing", "Tin Soldier", and their concept album Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, they later evolved into one of the UK's most successful psychedelic acts before disbanding in 1969. After the Small Faces disbanded, with Marriott leaving to form Humble Pie, the remaining three members were joined by Ronnie Wood as guitarist, and Rod Stewart as their lead vocalist, both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces. A revived version of the original Small Faces existed from 1975 to 1978.
Small Faces are also acknowledged as being one of the biggest original influences on the Britpop movement of the 1990s. Despite the fact the band were together just four years in their original incarnation, the Small Faces' music output from the mid to late sixties remains among the most acclaimed British mod and psychedelic music of that era.

The Ronettes, one of the most influential girl groups of the 1960s, were led by the captivating and sultry voice of Ronnie Spector. The group, originally from New York City, was formed by sisters Veronica "Ronnie" and Estelle Bennett, along with their cousin Nedra Talley. Known for their dramatic lookโ€”often sporting beehive hairstyles and bold eye makeupโ€”and their unique blend of pop, girl group, and rock sounds, The Ronettes were a major force in shaping the sound of early rock and roll. They are best remembered for their association with legendary producer Phil Spector and for their hit songs that continue to resonate in the pop music canon.
The Ronettesโ€™ breakthrough came in 1963 with their smash hit โ€œBe My Baby.โ€ Produced by Phil Spector, this song became one of the most iconic records of the 1960s, with its lush orchestration, infectious melody, and Ronnie Spectorโ€™s powerhouse vocals. The song's dramatic build-up, with its wall of sound production, is considered a blueprint for many of the girl group songs that followed. โ€œBe My Babyโ€ was a massive hit, and its success helped The Ronettes become one of the most influential groups of the era. Their sound was characterized by a perfect mix of romance, vulnerability, and youthful energy, and their vocal style set them apart from other girl groups.
Other hits from The Ronettes, such as "Baby, I Love You," "Walking in the Rain," and "The Best Part of Breakin' Up," continued to showcase their ability to blend catchy pop melodies with a bit of rock edge. Their songs were marked by Ronnie Spector's unique voice, which could effortlessly soar from delicate sweetness to bold intensity. The group's image, with their glamorous and rebellious style, also helped define the girl group genre, influencing countless other artists. Their music was a key part of the soundtrack of the early 1960s, combining the innocence of teen romance with the raw energy of rock and roll.
Though their time in the spotlight was brief, The Ronettesโ€™ influence was profound. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and their songs have been covered by artists such as The Beach Boys, The Ramones, and Bruce Springsteen. Their work also continues to be featured in films, television, and commercials, keeping their legacy alive. Despite their relatively short career, The Ronettes were groundbreaking in their ability to blend pop and rock sensibilities, paving the way for future girl groups and female rock stars.
The Ronettesโ€™ career was deeply intertwined with Phil Spectorโ€™s production style, especially his use of the "wall of sound" technique, which enveloped the listener in rich, layered instrumentation. This production style not only helped define their music but also revolutionized pop music during the early 1960s. Despite their commercial success, personal and legal challenges, particularly with Spector, affected the groupโ€™s longevity. After their peak in the mid-1960s, The Ronettes disbanded, with Ronnie Spector eventually launching a solo career.
Ronnie Spector, the voice and face of The Ronettes, went on to have a successful solo career, but it was the group's iconic status that secured them a permanent place in rock history. The Ronettesโ€™ music continues to influence and inspire generations of artists, and songs like โ€œBe My Babyโ€ remain a defining part of the pop music lexicon. With their unforgettable sound and unforgettable style, The Ronettes remain one of the most beloved and influential girl groups of all time.

Born on 19th November 1937, Geoff Goddard was an English songwriter, singer and instrumentalist. Working for Joe Meek in the early 1960s, he wrote songs for Heinz, Mike Berry, Gerry Temple, The Tornados, Kenny Hollywood, The Outlaws, Freddie Starr, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Ramblers and John Leyton. His song for Leyton, "Johnny Remember Me", reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart.
Goddard was born in Reading, Berkshire, England. He sang in choir in a local church before going on to study the viola and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Following National Service, he sought to move into popular music, and met Joe Meek. He initially attempted to establish himself as a Russ Conway/Liberace styled singer-pianist under the stage-name "Anton Hollywood". Meek promoted him, but he was unable to achieve success.
Eventually he released his solo records under his real name. He recorded four singles as solo artist, produced by Meek, on which he sang with his distinctive regional accent:
"Girl Bride" / "For Eternity" (1961), "My Little Girl's Come Home" / "Try Once More" (1962), "Saturday Dance" / "Come Back To Me" (1963) and "Sky Men" / "Walk With Me My Angel" (1963).
His best known efforts however were as a songwriter. The first project he worked on for Meek was the instrumental "Lone Riders" for The Flee-Rekkers. He then penned "Johnny Remember Me" for John Leyton. It became a No.1 hit single in the UK Singles Chart. Goddard also played keyboards on many of Meek's productions, most notably another chart-topper, The Tornados' "Telstar" and wrote and performed on the hit single's flip side, "Jungle Feverโ€.
Despite his considerable track record as a songwriter, Goddard withdrew from the music industry after falling out with Meek. He brought a breach of copyright case in 1965 against Meek concerning The Honeycombs' hit "Have I The Right?", written by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. Goddard claimed that it borrowed from his earlier song "Give Me The Chance". Goddard was unwilling to testify personally and lost the case.
Subsequently, Goddard returned to his home town and worked for many years in the catering department of the University of Reading. In 1985, the royalties and the platinum disc from the Marc Almond/Bronski Beat cover version of "Johnny Remember Me", having sold over 300,000 copies, came as a complete surprise to him.
Goddard died from a heart attack on 15th May 2000, at the age of 62. In the 2009 film, Telstar: The Joe Meek Story, Goddard was portrayed by Tom Burke.

In 1964, when the world was still humming with the echoes of the British Invasion, a young Dave Davies, guitar in hand, stood at the heart of a revolution. The Kinks, a band led by his older brother Ray, were about to unleash something that would change the landscape of rock music forever, and Daveโ€™s gritty guitar work would be the key. But what made his sound so special?
Unlike the smooth, polished guitar playing that defined much of early British rock, Daveโ€™s style was raw, rebellious, and unrefinedโ€”just like the era itself. He wasnโ€™t just a guitarist; he was the sonic architect behind some of the most iconic riffs in rock history. In a time when music was still finding its edge, his guitar cuts through like a jagged knife, breaking through the standard pop structures and creating something uniquely powerful.
The Kinks werenโ€™t just another band from the British Invasion. While Ray's sharp songwriting gave them their voice, it was Daveโ€™s distinct sound that carved out their identity. It wasnโ€™t just about strumming chordsโ€”it was about emotion, aggression, and attitude that no one had quite heard before. His infamous riff in โ€œYou Really Got Meโ€ is the perfect example: a sound so electrifying that itโ€™s often cited as one of the birthstones of hard rock. That raw, distorted guitarโ€”made with nothing more than a cheap amp and a cutting edgeโ€”defined a generation of music.
But Daveโ€™s influence didnโ€™t stop with iconic riffs. He brought a spirit to the Kinks that wasnโ€™t just about technical skill but about taking risks. He helped shape the bandโ€™s entire aesthetic, often pushing boundaries and fighting against the typical expectations of what rock music was supposed to sound like. Even in the often turbulent relationship with his brother Ray, Daveโ€™s musical contributions were undeniable. While Ray would sing and lead, it was Daveโ€™s guitar that created the pulse, the heartbeat, of the Kinksโ€™ distinctive sound.
In many ways, Dave Davies was the unsung hero of the bandโ€”a catalyst who turned ordinary melodies into unforgettable anthems. And though history might remember Rayโ€™s voice, itโ€™s Daveโ€™s gritty, inventive guitar work that made the Kinks a true force in rock history.

Often when credit is given to Phil Spector the songwriting team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich is overlooked. Not sure why

The Origin of Humble Pie: A Name Born from Modesty
After fulfilling outstanding live performance commitments, including a European tour in January, the Small Faces' dissolution was formally announced in March 1969. Around the same time, Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton revealed plans to form a new band together. Despite these plans being made public in March, the band had already been formed and had begun rehearsing as early as January of that year.
Instantly labeled as a "supergroup" by the UK music press due to the star power of its members, the band sought to downplay such lofty expectations. To achieve this, they chose the name Humble Pie, reflecting their desire for modesty and a grounded approach despite their considerable reputations.
The group signed with Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate Records and released their debut album, As Safe as Yesterday Is, in August 1969. Alongside the album, they released the single "Natural Born Bugie"/"Wrist Job," which quickly climbed to No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, with the album itself reaching No. 16 on the UK Album Charts. Notably, As Safe as Yesterday Is became one of the first albums to be described as "heavy metal" in a 1970 review in Rolling Stone magazine.
Their second album, Town and Country, took a different approach, showcasing a more acoustic sound with contributions from all four band members. Released in November 1969, the album coincided with Immediate Records' financial struggles and was rushed to market while the band was on its first U.S. tour. This era also saw the band experimenting with live performances that included both acoustic and electric sets. A highlight was their reimagined version of Graham Gouldman's "For Your Love," which became a centerpiece of their acoustic shows.
Recent tape archives revealed that Humble Pie recorded an impressive 30 tracks during its first nine months, many of which remained unreleased for decades. Among these hidden gems was their interpretation of Henry Glover's "Drown in My Own Tears," further showcasing the band's remarkable creativity and range during its early days.

Happy Birthday Chas Chandler: The Visionary Behind The Animals and Jimi Hendrix
Chas Chandler, born Bryan James Chandler on December 18, 1938, in Newcastle, England, was a renowned musician, producer, and manager. Best known as the bassist for The Animals, Chandler left a lasting legacy in the music world through his work with iconic artists like Jimi Hendrix and the British rock band Slade.
Chandlerโ€™s musical journey began in 1962 when he joined The Alan Price Trio, which later evolved into The Animals after Eric Burdon became their lead vocalist. Known for hits like "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", Chandlerโ€™s basslines and backing vocals played a vital role in the bandโ€™s success. Despite The Animals' popularity, Chandler grew frustrated with financial issues and the exhausting tour schedules, which prompted him to explore a different path in the music industry.
In 1966, Chandler discovered an unknown Jimi Hendrix performing in a New York City club. Captivated by Hendrixโ€™s talent, Chandler brought him to the UK, helped form The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and became instrumental in launching Hendrixโ€™s career. From financing the debut single "Hey Joe" to introducing Hendrix to influential figures like Eric Clapton, Chandlerโ€™s guidance was pivotal in Hendrixโ€™s rise to fame. However, creative differences led Chandler to step back during the recording of Hendrixโ€™s Electric Ladyland in 1968.
Chandler shifted his focus to managing and producing Slade, a British band that dominated the UK charts during the 1970s with six number-one hits. Beyond music, he expanded into business ventures, including recording studios and music publishing, and played a key role in developing Newcastle Arena, which opened in 1995.
Chas Chandler passed away on July 17, 1996, leaving behind a profound impact on the music world. From his basslines in The Animals to shaping the careers of legends, Chandlerโ€™s contributions remain an integral part of rock history.

Tony Barrow (the band's press agent): "In the British list of the fifty best singles from December 27th, 1962, published in the music business bible, Record Retailers and Music Industry News magazine, 'Love Me Do' rose from 22nd place to its highest position at No17.
The top two spots were held by Elvis Presley with "Return to Sender" and Cliff Richard with "Next Time".
Neil Aspinall (The Beatles' personal assistant): "They've sold a lot of 'Love Me Do' records, they've finished at number seventeen on the charts, and this one was great for a Liverpool band to hit the charts! Now the whole country knew about the Beatles, not just the North West and Liverpool, their songs were broadcast on the radio, everywhere people listened to them."

CELEBRATING HIS 84TH BIRTHDAYโ€ฆ
Born on 3rd March 1941, Mike Pender (born Michael John Prendergast) is an original founding member of the Merseybeat group The Searchers. He is best known as the lead vocalist on many hit singles by The Searchers, including "Needles and Pins" and "What Have They Done to the Rain?" They were the second group from Liverpool, after The Beatles, to have a hit in the United States when โ€œNeedles and Pinsโ€ charted during the first week of March 1964.
Liverpool-native Pender pursued a solo career after leaving The Searchers and released one solo single before forming his current band, Mike Pender's Searchers. The band perform songs from his many years with The Searchers in addition to all-new material and a blend of popular rock standards by classic artists such as Buddy Holly, the Drifters and Roy Orbison.
In his early years, Pender worked at a guitar shop as a day job in between playing nightly gigs with The Searchers. According to Pender, he is responsible for choosing the bandโ€™s name. "The band was founded by myself and John McNally. In 1957 John and I went to see the film โ€œThe Searchersโ€ starring John Wayne. I was an ardent Western fan and so I dragged John along with me to see it. I take the credit for choosing the name 'The Searchersโ€ and for co-founding the band in its original form".
After the Searchers recorded the singles "Sweets for My Sweet" and "Sugar and Spice", Pender took over lead vocal duties from Tony Jackson. During the late 1970s, The Searchers were signed by Seymour Stein's Sire Records and recorded two modernised albums. These included "The Searchers" and "Play for Today," which was retitled "Love's Melodies" outside the UK. The Searchers recorded what would become their final single with Pender, โ€œI Don't Want to Be the Oneโ€. Pender left The Searchers in 1985 to pursue a solo career and in 1988 joined an all-star rock band known as the Corporation. They were also known as the "Travelling Wrinklies", whose name was a parody of the popular rock group Travelling Wilburys. That band included Pender, Brian Poole, Clem Curtis, Tony Crane and Reg Presley, lead singer of The Troggs. With The Searchers continuing to perform, Pender was replaced by a new vocalist, Spencer James.
Selecting a group of talented musicians, Pender sought to reโ€“create the unique sound that popularised The Searchers. Forming the band "Mike Pender's Searchers", they began touring in the late 1980s and re-recorded The Searchers' hits plus 4 new tracks. Various CDs, featuring these new tracks and the re-recordings have been released in various countries around the world. Mike Pender's Searchers continue to book new shows and tour, targeting Britain, Australia, the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates. In 1994 Mike Pender's Searchers were the very first 1960s band to be invited to play on board the QE2 as part of the world famous liner's 25th anniversary celebrations.

Chris Montezโ€™ rock & roll career had just reached its peak and was on the slide. Promoted as the new Ritchie Valens, his single, โ€œLetโ€™s Danceโ€, had reached #4 and was dropping. His two follow up singles failed to chart.
He was encouraged when he was booked headlining a tour through the UK with Tommy Roe.
โ€œSo we get to England, and on the bill with us is this group called the Beatles. Nobody in the States had ever heard of the Beatles. We didnโ€™t know who the Beatles were,โ€ said Montez.
โ€œWe started the tour and these guys have a huge following,โ€ Tommy Roe said about the Beatles.
โ€œTheyโ€™re just kicking off their career, but their fans are everywhere. Theyโ€™re chasing them around the theaters and it was really pandemonium. The only time Iโ€™d ever seen anything like this was with Elvis.โ€
Then, the โ€˜Please Please Meโ€™ album was released during this tour.
โ€œSomebody in the business threw them a party,โ€ explained Tommy.
โ€œIt was in a beautiful house, kind of a country house out in the forest. Everybody was drinking beer and having a good time. And Chris had left the party and was on the bus asleep in his seat. And we all come piling back on. I come on, I sit down next to Chris. And John comes inโ€ฆ.โ€
According to witnesses, John was โ€œwhackedโ€ and poured his beer on Montez.
โ€œAnd the big scuffle starts, and we start fighting in the aisles and scuffling and, you know, it was kind of ugly,โ€ said Roe.
After the brawl ended, Paul tried to make peace.
โ€œPaul sat by me and said, โ€˜Come on, Chris, letโ€™s be friendsโ€ฆ.โ€™โ€ said Montez.
Montez made a come back in 1966 with Herb Albertโ€™s A&M stable. He switched to a more traditional role as a popular singer of soft ballads, scoring hits with โ€œThe More I See Youโ€ and โ€œCall Me".
