Thoughts on the state of British society?

Crime, or the fear of crime is a symptom, not a cause or a reason. Its the greed and avarice that underpins our Society that's the cause, we are told by the adverising world that more is better, the must have things, the things you can't live without, the essentials of life and success, if you don't have it, you are a failure. So if you don't have it, you can't afford it, but you 'need' it because the world measures your worth by what you have, then you take it. The answer is........feck knows, perhaps the end of the world as we know it is nigh.

Yet crime has been around much longer than marketing.

Ah yes, but in the good old days it was out of necessity, stealing a loaf of bread to feed your family, now it is stealing a pair of trainers because they are fashionable but over priced and you can't afford them, even though they only cost 50p to make, but you want them, everyone else has them, it's not fair, only to steal them and realise they look shit, and that nobody is wearing them any more, now everyone is wearing the latest trainers and so you need to go and steal them to keep up.

Theres a good interview with Danny Negrano and an Irish friend of his. They give a lot of their money away to homeless charities and Negarano says if a person has enough to pay the rent at the end of the month that should be enough. He gambles a lot away and says a lot of the young poker players just want to be rich and own expensive stuff. He mentioned one player who went into a car showroom and asked for a car more than 150k. His friend said he'd rather work in a soup kitchen

What I'm saying that although he probably still has a good life Negrano does not come across as materilistic. Its difficult to reproduce the interview on here. Its in Poker Player and may be in an omline version.
