davieG Posted 3 October 2012 Posted 3 October 2012 Full Report - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19809717 West Coast Main Line deal scrapped after contract flaws discovered The decision to award the UK's multi-billion-pound West Coast Main Line rail franchise to FirstGroup has been scrapped by the government. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said it was "deeply regrettable" that mistakes had been made by staff within the Department for Transport. Two reviews have been ordered into what happened, and the process will be re-run. The estimated cost of the mistakes will be £40m, he said. Mr McLoughlin emphasised that neither company had done anything wrong during the process. The "fault lies wholly and squarely with the Department of Transport", he said.
Captain... Posted 3 October 2012 Posted 3 October 2012 Wasn't this the one where Dicky Branson wasn't happy with what had happened appealed to his buddy cumrun, who changed transport secretary in the reshuffle and now the decision has been reversed, seems above board to me.
MooseBreath Posted 3 October 2012 Posted 3 October 2012 The rail industry is ****ed from the top down. It needs a complete overhaul, but no government will ever commit to it because it will take too long with too few tangible short term benefits. The cost/votes gained ratio is no good, so we just muddle through the mess year after year after year

It's not about being above board it's about a gigantic expensive mistake(s). It's not been reversed it's been aborted because the DfT fooked up the franchise process so they have to start it all over again and it's going to cost the taxpayer at least £40million

It's not been reversed it's been aborted because the DfT fooked up the franchise process so they have to start it all over again and it's going to cost the taxpayer at least £40million Which they did after Branson throw his toys out the pram, and cumrun sacked the transport sec. Maybe Branson pickle was right, but it strikes me as dodgy, and if not then it is another spectacular display of competence from the government, I don't know if I would prefer them to be corrupt than downright useless.
