Is this whole thing escalating to new heights?

I think the point Flowy is making is that it is all very well and good saying we will go over there and fight people and kill people and risk people's lives to protect a useless piece of rock when it is not your life that will be at risk.

As much as I do think we have every right to the Falklands, I think it would be a huge tragedy if people go over there risking their lives and die for no reason, especially if feelings are being deliberately stoked up by cvnts at the S*n.

Thank you Captain that was the point I was making. All this bullshit about we should do this and we should do that are so often made by jingoistic people who would shit themselves if they had to storm an enemy position and stab people to death with bayonets, as happened last time.

The very least our government should do is be honest about why they want to keep the Falklands because it sure as hell isn't about ensuring democracy to a few islanders at the other end of the world who have never even set foot in Britain. It is about oil and minerals and that is why Argentina want those god forsaken islands, what other reason could there be ?

Are we really going to go back to the dark days when a national newspaper like the Sun can be used by a government to whip up the public with jingoistic tub thumping like " our boys " and " gotcha " in reference to the sinking of the Belgrano ?

War is a dirty filthy degrading enterprise for all humans, and if as has been sugested before all the politicians who declare war were then made to face each other in a trench in a god foresaken country and fight it out among themselves , there would never be another war.

That wasnt his point, he was just being a pedantic asshat to me.

I wasnt even talking about war, this will never result in war because Argentina have no real military. I meant politically and morally.

Everyone uses the term 'we' when talking about their nation, I dont deserve to be singled out as some war mongering dickhead who expects people to die for me. I look after people from the army all the time. I spent a week with a lad 2 years ago who'd lost all his ****ing limbs in Helmand and it still breaks my heart to think of him and his mum and dad, I despise war.

Bleh, really annoyed me now!

It was not a personal dig at you at all. I disagree with anyone using the" we" word in any context when they don't actually mean themselves. If that is being pedantic well I guess I'm guilty as charged. Lots of awful things have been said and done by governments of this country and often enough with the words We being used to include us the public. Well sorry but not in my name.

It has Britts living there so I think we should defend it by any means we have left these days.

Which bit is not referring to war then if you did not mean war ( any means ) ?

'We are a grandmother' I believe was a quote from good old Maggie.

I actually find myself agreeing with some of what Flowolf has said. I have always said if any country's leaders have a dispute they should not expect to do their dirty work but any politician that vote for a war should gather in a field and fight it out between them. Wars are fought for power and it is not the man on the street that enlists that has the power at the end of it but the ones that asks them to fight and die for them.

The Argentinians have been agitating for the Falklands since the fifties, probably for the same reasons as now, as a deflection from their govt awful record.

Mrs Thatcher was negotiating a 25 year lease back of the islands with Argentina when they invaded, if they hadn't they would own the islands by now.

Not all conflicts are about oil. If there is some oil there now it will belong to the Falkland Islanders not us, although it might be a British firm who make money from it.
