Not The Big Snooze

Action Homeless are putting on a Not The Big Snooze event again this year on Friday 22 March. This year it's being held at the LCB depot in the City Centre. I have foolishly agreed to take part and need sponsors. When I get the link for donations I will post it (for those interested)

You can also volunteer link and details here http://www.actionhom...port-us/events/

Last year was at the LCC ground Grace Road so this year will be mor accessible for me.

Could this be made a sticky so it doesn't slip too far down the pages..

Thanks.

Edit. I don't want this thread to turn into a huge 20+ page homeless debate. Ignore if you disagree with it, I will respect your decision.

Can you please tell us all a bit more about what the money actually goes towards?

There's a homeless bloke who keeps sleeping against the door of my office and getting upset when I turn up to work and disturb him. If any of the money is going to him to buy strong lager, then I object. If someone is going to give him a shower and teach him some manners though, where do I sign?

There is more information on the website. Basically money goes on providing night shelters and keeping hostels going where the council are making cuts forcing people to sleep in doorways but that's another issue an as I have said I do not want this to be a debate about the homeless thread because when I post the link to donate it will become lost if there are too many pages.

I've been walking in the town centre for 20 years and they have always been sleeping in doorways throughout that time cuts or not.

I'm not trying to make it a debate. I was trying to help you. If you don't advise what the money goes towards then people are unlikely to donate!

Anyway, I'm out because my experience of homeless people is that they are rude, aggressive, drunks. There are obviously exceptions, but they don't hassle me every time I step out of my office, so the bad ones ruin it for them.

They are aiming to get about £10,000 to fund emergency beds at one the hostels, so that it provides people on the street somewhere to sleep, eat and also to have a shower :).. once in the hostel, the charity provides them with the stability and help to get their life sorted.

As Rincewind said, with all the council cuts to the funds (about 45% of all funds) they receive, this sort of event is essential for the survival of the charity.

There is always going to be the exceptions with Homeless people. It's the same as football fans, you get twats at every team causing trouble, then everybody thinks all fans are the same.

The majority of homeless people I have come accross (I work for Action Homeless, so have met a few) are genuine, nice people that have just fell on hard times. Obviously you do get some idiots though.

Thanks. I should have made it clearer. Still a month to go so just never wanted to go off subject with the stereotype views.thus turning the thread into them and us.

I generally give the homeless a few quid nowadays as I'm a bit guilt ridden from a few things I did to some of them in the past.

I do like them to do something for it though, we used to give one of them a few quid as he used to stand telling jokes around 1am on a Sunday Morning to all the pissheads coming out of the Rat and Parrot, used to be a bird who sang as well and she would do a request for a couple of quid.

Can't stand the ones who just ask for you money whilst sitting there though. Pisspoor effort, have to at least try.

Me too but I'd rather the number went down than increase. Down Not Out encorages them to volunteer so that they can learn new skills related to the media. Journalism, film making, photography etc.

Rincewind, I'd start again and incorporate some of this post and see if you can get it 'stickied'.

Sounds like a decent cause.

Thanks. I'll wait now until I get the link to the donate site. Should be sent it vial email. Not sure how they work. Last year I was a helper but as it is a smaller place they don't need so many so I'm doing the sleeping under cardboard thing instead.

Nothing like the real thing though.

I'll make a new thread. This is an open letter that is on the site below. The site is being revamped and DNO is having a new logo.

OPEN LETTER

My story starts with being happily married with two beautiful children, a good job and my own property. I suffered depression due to the loss of my Mum and my Wife, suddenly I could not cope anymore and my children were taken away.

I then lost my property and was now living from door to door. I then lost my job and found myself out on the street. If it wasn’t for Action Homeless and the other organisations I have been involved with, such as ‘Quality of life’ and ‘The Dawn Centre’ I would not be here.

These places are vital for the homeless people in Leicester, without their help and the people who have helped me voluntarily; many more homeless people would be left on the streets.

I have strived to help myself and many more people I have encountered in ‘the system’. I have been given awards and achievement certificates and still the local authority do not view me as an individual. They do not acknowledge that we are all very different.

It isn’t necessarily about what Leicester City Council can do for us but what we ourselves can do to make Leicester a great place to live in and to be proud of our City.

If we work together we can eradicate the ‘problem’ and get rid of negative vibes about homelessness and homeless people. We are not all misfits and addicts; we are people who need a helping hand at a hard time in our lives.

I have served my Country and worked all of my life, like many other homeless people and have contributed back to my community. So why do I find myself disillusioned by people in authority with their eyes closed to the plight of Leicester’s homelessness situation?

There are many homeless people working very hard, and voluntarily, to give something back to society for the help they have had, we call it ‘gratitude’.

It is time for our local authority to stand up and be accountable for having created a system that forces upon us lengthy hostel stays and an inability to work due to extortionate overheads within that system. What chance does our younger generation have if the people currently in charge are blind to their own mismanagement? Instead they feel we are the ‘problem’?

The younger generation is our future so how can we strive to create a generation to be proud of, where everyone has equal rights – regardless of race, colour or creed – and live together harmoniously? It is our duty to enforce the positive, steer away from the negative and to strive to make OUR Leicester a great place to live, TOGETHER!

Mr D Beardsmore.

That's the donate site Rincewind, if you want to make a new thread.

Thanks. I have made a new thread. Not sure if there would have been a special sponsor link but this will do. Found out it is the same week as the beer festival which I also volunteer for Will just have to miss the Friday session. Also work at BHF shop.

Usually there until 5-6 so will have to find out what time the event starts as it's not far away from the shop.
