City work rate

Whilst watching the Everton v Man City game, one thing that stands out to me is how hard Everton work off the ball to re-gain possession.

This is one area that frustrates the hell out of me when watching Leicester.

Appreciate at times the quality is not always going to be there and we are not going to win every game, but it is a lot easier to take a defeat when the players have worked their socks - which is not currently happening.

Yes we were spoilt with the o'neil years, but I remember, savage, izzet and Lennon literally dripping in sweat at the end of 90 minutes, EVERY game, win, lose or draw.

Watching players half as good as the above 3 is very frustrating. Pre-madonnas such as Marshall, Kane, Drinkwater strutting around the pitch at half pace thinking they have the quality does nothing for me.

Other than nuggent who is old school with a excellent work rate, it's hard to name another 5 that give their all for 90 minutes.

Just feel if we could have added workrate to the quality of the players we have, this league would have nearly been won by us...

Just because players don't charge around the pitch doesn't mean they're not trying their hardest. If Marshall and Drinkwater were to just chase the ball, it would throw the whole system off balance because they'd be so out of position. We need to pressure the ball more as a team, I don't think any of our players can really be accused of not trying.

Marshall, Drinkwater and knockaert have got so much more ability than savage, lennon and izzet but I know which 3 I would back all day long and which 3 work harder...

Up until the end of Jan our work rate was phenomenal, we played high, pressed for every ball and our talented players reaped the rewards as we rose up the league then something happened and we dropped off, teams got better balls in and we started conceded and failing to win... seemed to have turned the corner Vs Cardiff though, fingers crossed it's not a false dawn & we can build on it

I dunno if work rates the problem really. I think most our squad (especially our small midfield) are young technical players who work hard but aren't naturally aggressive ball winners - Evertons squad is full of these, they run around a lot but are also big, strong and put their foot in when they get there.

Too true, if city played Everton at present it would defiantly be a case of men vs boys

Like many things, probably an issue of confidence. Nobody likes it when they pressure the player on the ball, they pass it past you and you can't back to defend. You just become the scapegoat like Vardy was on Tuesday night.

I do like players that work hard. As long as they try and work hard, as a fan, I don't ask for much more. Nugent, Vardy and Morgan are the best examples at our club. Players like Gallagher frustrate me because of the lack of work rate.

Some players don't need to work hard though, I mean the best players, nobody in our division. I love Dennis Bergkamp, a player so good he makes the game look easy, without working as hard as other players.

Most teams we play against line up with only 1 striker.

You're asking for a deathwish if you try and press a 451/433 with 442.

I would have preferred to have lost 2-0 to sheff wed with Harry Kane running himself into the ground than lose 1-0, not really push them with him strutting around like a champions league winner for 60 minutes! Hard work first, quality will then shine through....
