If I'm not mistaken there seems to be a couple of games on at a reasonable time this weekend??? as early as 8.30pm over here, Quarter finals as well? Is this right or do I have my times wrong.

I'm pretty sure you're right. Off the top of my head, USA vs El Salvador on Sunday is either 3:30 or 4:00 pm Eastern time.

Excellent, I'm sure there is one on Saturday too, this is something I suppose, going mad through lack of football atm. Pre season is shit to both spectate and partake in, no competitive games to watch for 2 months besides the extremely short confeds, and my 5 a side games keep getting cancelled. I'm going mad.

If I wasn't going to the pub I'd be tempted by Celtic Clifftonville tonight in the Champions League it's got that bad.

Mexico and the US are the only big teams.

They are, but they are playing decidedly weaker teams than their top squads in this tournament and could still be beaten (Mexico already has been). USA is favorite and the group stage confirmed this.

Teams can make a few changes to their rosters now, and it will be interesting to see what kind of changes the US and Mexico make.

Mexico and Panama are set for a rematch in the semifinals.

Today's quarterfinals should make for much better matches than yesterday's. USA vs El Salvador at 4 pm, then Honduras vs Costa Rica at 7. M&T Bank Field in Baltimore will likely be sold out about (70k) but unfortunately for the US, there will likely be A LOT of Salvadorans there.

A mate of mind had his single biggest bet on Panama at 5/1 £400. Gutted he didn't tell me in advance! Crazy odds for Mexico B team.

And they did it again! This time only at 3/1!

Panama hasn't been this hot since the David Lee Roth era of Van Halen.

Adios, Mexico! :D

USA vs Panama for the final in Chicago today... While it's not the USA vs Mexico final that the press in those countries were pining for, there really cannot be any complaints as these two have been the best teams in this tournament by some distance.

USA will be favorites but they will be without Jürgen Klinsmann, who was sent to the stands in the 87th minute vs Honduras. I think Klinsi had a point (the ref was terrible) but you don't go and get yourself kicked out of a game your team is dominating with just minutes to go.

Blas Perez and Gaby Torres are going to have to do a lot of work up front for Panama to win today, but as far as striker partnerships go in CONCACAF, that's a pretty good one. Perez is a familiar face for Panama, but Torres might be the real danger man. IIRC he was once a Man Utd trainee, but he's lost his way over the years. He has settled down in Venezuela over the past two seasons, and is having an excellent Gold Cup--he might be primed for a move to a bigger club in the near future.

Well if the USA don't win it'll be a disaster for them. Panama FFS.

They've beaten Mexico twice.

I wouldn't say it would be a disaster for the USA if they lost, because this version of the Gold Cup doesn't mean as much in the grand scheme of things when Klinsmann's other priorities are considered. But obviously, we want to win, we are certainly favorites to win, and it would be an upset if we didn't win.

We dominated Panama in June with our A-team, and a win today would cap a dominating Gold Cup performance done mostly with our B-team. That would send a clear message to the continent--especially Mexico--that we are top dogs once again.

Speaking of Mexico, reports have been swirling across the Rio Grande since Friday that suggest Chepo de la Torre will be fired on Monday. That would leave a new manager just about a month to prepare for the next WCQs.

So, we got our trophy back.

Truth be told, the final was a poor game. Panama's defense was well-organized, but they never looked interested in scoring a goal. USA started off slowly, but were gradually able to get more players forward, remained patient, and won their just reward.

Jürgen Klinsmann is 100% correct when he says that this is "only CONCACAF," and that we shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves. But there are lots of things to be happy about here.

The good:

1) USA is a deeper team than we thought, and everyone that really needed to play well to press for a spot on the World Cup roster contributed well.

2) Landon Donovan is back, and he has bought into Klinsi's philosophy.

3) The knock on Klinsi in Germany was that he had knacks for spotting talent and motivating, but Joachim Löw was the real brain behind the operation. But Klinsi has looked like a tactical genius lately. Some of the stuff we've been playing in our 11-game winning streak has been gorgeous.

4) It's a really exciting time to be a soccer fan in the US, and a lot of other Americans feel the same way. Attendance surrounding the US games was great, and our boys were nearly always treated to decidedly pro-US crowds. Press coverage of the tournament was the highest it's ever been. The semifinal vs Honduras got better ratings on Fox than the 2013 Champions League final, and I'm sure Sunday's game was watched by even more Americans.

5) If Klinsi (I'm sure he'll still be the manager in 2015) wants to play a B-team in the next Gold Cup, he's well within his rights to do so because now, we have at the least a 50% shot at playing in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Hell, he could probably play the u-20s and spend the entire group stage on the beach if he wanted to.

6) Mix Diskerud told the US set-up that if he weren't capped soon, he'd go play for Norway. That didn't exactly seem like an "offer you can't refuse" at the time but I think everyone can be happy that Klinsi went for it. This kid has a future in our midfield.

The bad:

1) Poor Stuart Holden... he's worked so hard to get back in the USMNT set-up after missing nearly two seasons with injuries and has a solid if unspectacular Gold Cup. Then, less then 20 minutes into the final, he blows out his ACL again and will likely miss the entire 2013-14 season. :(

2) I tell you what, the other teams CONCACAF had better step up their games. Not everyone (esp. Mexico) played all of their top players but no team in this tournament even came close to beating us. Even in both of our 1-0 wins, we were completely dominant.

3) If your team gets a CONCACAF referee at the next World Cup that isn't from either Mexico or the US, do some mediation or some yoga or something and calm yourself the **** down because I can guarantee you that if you don't, you're going to be filled with murderous rage at some point during the game. We have some terrible refs here.

4) (If you're a Mexico fan) The FMF have decided to stick with Chepo as manager.

For me, Mexico are still the Champions of North America.

I don't really count this tournament tbh.

Not many do.

But the yanks would turn out on mass if they were in the final of a tiddlywinks cup.

I can see where you're coming from, considering the relative strengths of the teams in 2011 to now. But I can tell you that nobody in Mexico feels like El Tri are champions of anything right now (this, so soon after some great success by their youth team).

This is about as stupid as a comment possible. Are you sure you lived in the US once before? What other national team gets significant press coverage or following outside the Olympics?

Mexico will always be the champions of North America.

They weren't in Jeonju in 2002. Until they do something to exorcise that demon, I'm afraid they can't lay claim to that throne.

Just one of those things, Ron gets it.

Mexico will always be the champions of the North and Uruguay will always be the champions of the South. President Mujica will always be stroking his pet pig thinking of 1950.

Oh, I get it; like how Scotland will always be the champions of the British Isles?

He eserves his own thread.

Not really, we are by far the most successful side in the British Isles.

Same as Uruguay and Mexico are in their regions.
