While he could have phrased what he said far better, Alex does have a slight nugget of a point in there, in that GP's can be a bit too willing to just slap on a diagnosis: for instance having talked to a fair few people there does seem to be something of a trend with GP's where low mood + disruptions to sleep and appetite (i.e. classic depression symptoms) & childhood abuse immediately equals borderline personality disorder, here's some pills, now **** off and talk to a shrink instead. I'm well aware it's a ****ing shit illness, but it's fair to say it has been rather trivialised by a lot of people self-diagnosing as such.
