hairy Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 What's a community news cafe? Somewhere where you can go for a cuppa and hear all the latest gossip and moan about things.

Rincewind Posted 24 July 2013 Author Posted 24 July 2013 What's a community news cafe? Difficult to explain in a few words. This one is for anyone new that is interested in media be it photoghy filming, reporting radio. They then find stories from the people of the community. It does involve a little moaning but do you know those potholes near to where you live? How many times have you reported it. Along comes a media reporter takes photos and then posts the story on a website. Two weeks later the potholes are filled in. A little silly but more serious issues can be dealt with. Citizens Eye now have the respect of the Mercury Radio Leicester City Councillors and other Cities are setting up their own News agencies. I suppose I was lucky to get into it. I was out of work. They wanted volunteers and offered training in something that interested me. After a while I was told that a new group DNO was being set up and would I be interested. I joined to see what it was about and to keep busy. Now part-time sub-editor and have the confidence to interview the Lord Mayor and present a radio show. If I can do it others can and if that means getting someone off the streets and into training I am pleased. The others I work with have been in an hostel at some point which makes me feel a little guilty of the lack of the experience.
Rincewind Posted 24 July 2013 Author Posted 24 July 2013 Do you have to be unemployed to do this? I don't think so. Just like volunteering just give the time that you can. There is a submit story button on the website. It just has to be approved and checked for libel, copyright etc before going up. Before I'd seen the flyers in the library but could not do it because of my 48 hour shifts and my spare time was utilised inother ways mostly involving a pint or two.
