Leicestershire blue - best cheese in the world

Recommended Posts

Forget French brie, Italian mozzarella or Swiss gruyère, the best cheese in the world is an English blue made right here in Leicestershire.

Claxstone Smooth Blue, produced by Long Clawson Dairy, saw off competition from 4,286 entrants to be named supreme champion at this year's Nantwich International Cheese Awards.

Big cheeses from the dairy industry, who judged the competition, said the "exceptionally creamy" blue was the worthy winner.

The award is the latest in a string of accolades for both the cheese and the dairy, which is based near Melton.

Kim Kettle, managing director at Long Clawson, said the cheese had only been on the market for 12 months after three years in the making. "We're over the moon to win this," he said. "Everyone who puts in all the effort in making the cheese, it's reward for all that hard work.

"We took it to market last year and within 12 months we get this award, which is great."

Cheese makers spent three years perfecting the smooth blue to make sure it was spot on before it hit the shelves.

Once it has been churned, it is left to mature for about six weeks to give it a unique flavour and creamy texture.

It is now on sale in Waitrose and local stores and specialist outlets.

Mr Kettle said the secret to the cheese was it's creaminess.

"It's very mild, very creamy, very soft and smooth and it spreads easily from the fridge," he said. "It's not a complex cheese, just very, very nice."

So, the bosses like it and expert judges obviously like it. We did a taste test here at the Mercury and we like it, too.

But what about you?

We took to the streets of Leicester to ask: Is the Claxstone Smooth Blue really the best cheese in the world?

Long Clawson do some fantastic cheeses.  Not surprising given the suitablity of the countryside in that part of the Leics for dairy cattle.

Not tried this one though, but def will.
