Cruss5 Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 I know this is a bit of a strange one. I cycle long distance for charity and often for the fun of it. I usually camp at places along the way. Sometimes this isn't practical due to me having too much or not enough energy. I've been contemplating wild camping for quite a while but not plucked up the courage to give it a go. Anybody ever done this and can they offer tips on where to pick to put up your tent without annoying people etc. Any help would be appreciated.
MPH Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 If you are camping anywhere 'wild' be extra sensitive about exactly where.. of course. some people do not appreciate a stranger camping on their land. Taking a little sign and putting outside your tent saying something about the charity bike ride you are doing might stop you from getting moved on.... so might asking someone permission if you suspect you know who the land belongs to......

Thanks for that. I've read about asking people but sometimes its not always possible. The sign is a good idea.
Zingari Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Be careful some drunken tory doesn't come along and piss on you thinking you're a homeless person. Other than that I can't see any other pitfalls
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Used to do loads of it, especially in the Lake District and Scotland. If there was a farmhouse nearby, I always asked, and was never turned down. Even slept in a barn a couple of times. Happy days and great fun.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 In Scotland I believe you can pretty much camp where you like, so long as it's not someone's garden. http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/activities/walking/wild-camping As part of Scotland’s access legislation, the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, you are allowed to camp on most unenclosed land.
Rincewind Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Are you doing the skyride on BH Sunday? This year the Curve,s stage is part of the route.
Orkneyfox Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Are you the naked rambler? This site has the Scottish guidelines and stuff from the access code - probably along the lines of "don't shit in someones water supply" http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/activities/walking/wild-camping This second site has various suitable sites listed though I am not sure how wild some of them are: http://www.thehappycampers.co.uk/campsites/wildcamping/

Rincewind Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 There is a sleep out over the weekend though but I wouldn't call it camping. Happening in a few towns and cities. No tents.

Rincewind Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 It's called The Last Stand. I won't post a link because not everyone will agree on its principles. Just add leicester to a Google search. I'll be on the market on the Sunday for Leicester Day on a stall for who I work for.

I'm afraid I was an early victim of this war of attrition being waged against those that want to fight for poorer members of society . Maybe I've just grown too weary and selfish these days or maybe i've grown to think it's a lost battle , but I hope you continue while you can . All the best
MooseBreath Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 There's a chance that I could be in the area on Sunday. I might pop and have a look at the down and out stall and congratulate them on all their fantastic work.

Doing what I do there are a lot of things that come to light that shock even me. It's like its being covered up. What gets me is there are 51 labour out of 54 councillors on the leicester council and they have gone along with all what the tories have told them to do. Other councils have made changes and revisions For me though it isn't a case of sides.
Cruss5 Posted 18 August 2013 Author Posted 18 August 2013 Thanks for the link. After 8 months of being unemployed due to a greedy company i worked for making me redundant (after sending 100's of jobs offshore) i can understand hardships of people. We had to sacrifice having luxuries like a car and made sure our children were fed but we didn't eat as much as we liked/needed. I start a new job next week and hopefully this will be a turn in my miss fortunes. Times are very hard out there, i have never been out of work previously and the government didn't help me with benefits when i needed them most. I want to learn from this time. I might see what i'm doing on the saturday, can't promise if i can make it but will try.

Yes i read that and it only reinforces my opinion that politicians are mostly powerless puppets on the really important issues The tories in turn are being told what to do and are only there to sell the policies and take the blame . (and the lucrative salaries to make it worthwhile) edit; When you say "stuff is being covered up" , it makes you sound like a conspiracy theorist there's hope for you yet Ken lad

If the journalists got off their backsides and went out on the streets they would find plenty that would shock and surprise a lot of people. We have found 500 stories surrounding social issues this year. Have you also noticed that some things have been introduced during the good weather? It gives some time to get used to things for when the winter arrives.
Rincewind Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 Why does this not sound genuine ? He is more than welcome to come along and use whatever knowledge of facts and evidence he has to convince my colleagues that their personal experience, knowledge and documented evidence is wrong. Of course any praise or congratulations on the work that we do would also be most welcome.

Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 Stiff competition!! Haha, that was a pun and a half Ken, bravo
