Was doing ok, had a population of around 130 with plenty of food, but then a potato harvest was diseased and a double whammy of smallpox and mumps swept through the community. I've ran out of medicine and my graveyard is now full up of the deceased. 30 or more deaths in the first winter after the blighted harvest and I fear more agony in the new season.

I like this game but it becomes a bit of a grind after the first few years. Bit like marriage ha ha. Guess I've just got to remember why I feel in love with it at the start!

I agree, I think that's why the modkit was necessary. I think once I've got the hang of it I'm just going to try and design some nice looking towns while trying to keep them functional. Some people post some really, really good looking ones and mine just look a mess.

Hopefully there'll be some good mods released, there's already talk of balancing issues, new production chains (wheat > flour > bread etc), new building skins, new building types etc.

Thought I'd drag this one up. Loaded this up again yesterday and discovered a mod called Colonial Charter which has added an absolute tonne of features to the game. Loads more buildings, bigger production chains and a lot of "decorations" so you can festoon your town with fences, flowerbeds and flags and loads of other stuff.

Go on the forums or on reddit, they'll have lots of mod info.

Colonial Charter is essential for any longevity. The base game is a fantastic achievement considering it was made entirely by one bloke but Colonial Charter is a great addition from the modding community. I even saw one the other day for an Arabic-style mod in development. Check out reddit.com/r/banished

I can't bring myself to get back into it, it was just as much of a time sink as Cities: Skylines.

Literally make it about five/seven winters in before the entire town dying catastrophically, yet alone spending resources on fvcking decorations around the place lol

Might boot it up again tonight to relive those two months of distraught anguish as the hunger and cold sets in again

I always struggle to get enough clothes. I build a tailor but I can't seem to get my hands on enough leather!

Oh crap! I'm back into this now. I forgot how good it is. But it is a cruel game! Managed to get my population up to 30 or so but then had a fire which destroyed my storage barn, despite the heroic efforts of my villagers to put it out. 14 have starved to death already. I'm hoping there will be at least a handful left to start again..

This game looks the tits, still worth picking up?

Definitely mate, if you like this kind of thing. It is very finely balanced. Your population "is" the game. Losing one or two to starvation or cold in the early years can put you into a downward spiral. But building too many houses (which allows your villagers to "get it on" and create children) can expand your population too quickly. You need the kids to grow up and become workers but each one is another mouth to feed!

There are different starting levels as well - on the easier ones you have more people, a herd of livestock and seeds for farming. On the ultra hard mode "Adam and Eve" you start with just two people and virtually no provisions and have to build your community from that!!

Was playing the super hard "Adam and Eve" mod last night. It starts off difficult, but not impossible, after all you only have two mouths to feed to start with . Pretty soon Adam and Eve had three kids but then I ran out of tools which had a significant impact on production. I became fixated on making new tools and lost sight of my food stock. Winter set in and the three children died one by one from the cold before Adam to threw a seven. Eve limped on for a few more months before meeting an unfortunate and lonely end starving to death the following summer.

Sad sad sad.

Classic Banished story. lol

I love how hilariously brutal this game is. Might have to reinstall it and try some mods, I've only played vanilla.

Are there any MUST have mods that you wouldn't play without, stripey?

The only mod I've used so far is Colonial Charter 1.6 which adds loads of game modes (including the Adam and Eve mode). There are lots more on Steam but I've steered clear so far as they seem like they make the game easier - "more logs per tree" etc.

Yeah that's exactly the stuff I don't want.

Basically just want extra functionality, more stuff to build / do to make it a bit more interesting.

Just add Colonial Charter then. I haven't even looked at it all yet but there are extra links in the production chains which adds more complexity. For instance as well as Logs and Stone for building, some buildings require Lumber so you'll need to build a Sawmill at some point. Iron working is different as well. Your Blacksmith will make tools but he needs Iron ore and Furnance Fuel (produced in another building) to do so.

There are more markets, storage barns and various other buildings as well. Also a whole raft of stuff to decorate your town with (hedges, flowerbeds, duck ponds, fences and flagpoles etc) although these will not be greatly appreciated as your villages starve/freeze to death or contract diseases!

Do new people move in from outside when you build houses or is it all self contained and babies born from within? My first try went great then in a matter of minutes I had about 20 deaths, not enough workers and the whole thing went to shit at a ridiculous pace.

They don't move in from outside. Once children become adults they will leave home and move in to one of your free houses and start a family. Thus building houses (or not) is the way to regulate your population. Too many houses can lead to a population explosion and if you don't have enough food/firewood the whole thing can unravel quickly.

The only other way you can gain people is if nomads turn up. But you need to have built the town hall for this to happen and you do get to choose if you want to accept them or not.

picked it up for 6 euros on steam a couple of  hours ago. Had the devil's own time trying to figure out all the stats and menus. Pushed everyone into farming, fishing and hunting, figuring that should keep safe from the risk of running out of food. By the time i realised firewood was running down, i was also nearly out of lumber needed to construct a forester lodge. And so it just sat there... half built... until everyone froze to death. Completely surrounded by a forest of trees!

Gonna do some research on logging options and give it another go.

It's brutal. The early part of the game is the best imo - trying to balance everything in the first few years is really hard!

Been two years since I last had a crack at this, tried a hard game and lost half my population in the first winter lol kinda helped though, meant I could micromanage and grow out a lot better, up to a population of 18 but my gatherer huts are beginning to struggle for food at this point...
