FA imposes football betting ban on players

How are they going to police it?

I can only assume they'll be in close contact with both the authorities as well as the bookies - there must be a special task force taking care of things in two months time.

Get you wife / mate / someone anonymous to lay the bet.....

But it is also illegal to tip someone off and i guess this could be seen as that. Obviously still very difficult to police...

always found it strange they could put bets on who the next manager would be. someone i know who worked for Blue Square said Jaaskelainen used to do it.

Players this year were allowed to bet on any League, apart from their own, the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Footballers who are gamblers will just turn to the horses more where they can gamble more every day of the week.. Rumour has it than John Terry has lost £5 million in gambling and had to re-mortgage his house.

Eidur Gudjonsson was 6million in debt to Empire I was told by a guy in the industry, I'm sure loads of them are now, unlimited cash with loads of free time, it's a recipe for disaster.

On the laws, I don't like it, seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut, why shouldn't a player who plays in the conference be allowed to stake a few quid on Liverpool v Man Utd in the Premier League? It's ridiculous. yet again a scenario where the vast majority have to suffer due to the idiocy of a few.

Perhaps it's just easier to put a blanket ban on than having to police each individual bet, checking to see if they could have any possible influence over its outcome. I can't imagine it's worth the time and effort.

They couldn't care less about the welfare of the players - this law is quite clearly a way of generating extra revenue for the FA. The precedent is already there from the bbc article: "Winger Townsend was fined £18,000 by the FA in June 2013, striker Jerome £50,000 last August and midfielder Gosling £30,000 in March."

If the fines were put into a special fund to provide counselling/education for players to warn them of the risks of gambling, then great.  But that is not the case, and it's clear the money from fines will sink into the FA's coffers, in the same way parking fines have just become another source of income for local councils.
