Hack Posted 26 May 2014 Author Posted 26 May 2014 Don't know, don't watch Sunderland that much, but Gus would have changed things, and when Wickham came back he flourished, Gus may have realised things weren't working recalled Wickham out of pure desperation, then looked at how to get the best out of the players he had. Or it was just a coincidence that Gus was setting them up to play that way and because of that Wickham thrived, or maybe Wickham just needed the confidence of a few games and a few goals under his belt. Dunno. Wood is a different matter as his style of play disrupts ours, when he is on the pitch it is not that he looks bad as an individual, it is that we look bad as a team. Without the front two pressing when we don't have the ball, making intelligent runs when we do, driving back the defenders, creating space for others we aren't as effective, especially at home. This is not saying Wood is a bad player, just that his style doesn't complement how we try and play. I frankly don't think that statement is completely correct. Even so, it does not mean that both the team and any given player can adapt to. Other wise there would be a lot of turmoil in all clubs when either new managers come in or a manager wants to play different formations or styles. Players learn and adapt or they move on. He is still very young and has shown in the early part of his career with us showed what he had. Then got injured, NP went 4-4-2 with Nuge and Jamie and Wood didn't get back in the run on squad. People have to stop pigeonholing players in such narrow terms. Vardy was terrible, remember just 1 season ago, not good enough for the championship!! Chris Wood I think makes that step up given the chance this season.
suffolk fox Posted 26 May 2014 Posted 26 May 2014 Chris Wood just isn't a very good footballer. I genuinely do want the bloke to succeed here and I want to eat my words - but I can't see him playing in the top flight. He's got the ability to shoot, both close range and from long range, but his all-round game is very average and for me he doesn't use his physique to his advantage. Spot on son take a bow.
Claridge Posted 26 May 2014 Posted 26 May 2014 Wasn't he injured for a short while last season? Also, it's always going to be difficult when you're the third choice striker in the Championship winning team. Vardy and Nugent have been immense but we have, in short spells, seen what Wood can do. As for Vardy, he was so bad in his first season, any improvement would look incredible but I do just feel that we're starting to rate him a bit to highly. He's got pace, we know that, but he's also missed a lot of 'easy' chances. Yeah, he's a great player but I don't think he's as clinical as Wood. Put yourself in the shows of Sean Dyche, if Chris Wood was made available could you imagine Premier League Burnley signing him, I could. Lets hope so the big lumps useless
I blame Wellens Posted 26 May 2014 Posted 26 May 2014 I am hoping we have not seen wood at his best. If we have we're *****d
NeilLCFC Posted 26 May 2014 Posted 26 May 2014 Really hope Wood does well for us. After the way he started it would be such a shame for his career with us to continue you the way it's been going
LeicesterBran Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 He has potential to be a really good striker in the top flight but, I'm not sure if we shall ever see the best out of him. Reckon we shall loan him next season to a Championship club.
docho66 Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Connor Wickham spotted in Leicester today! Even shopped at AmeriCandy and they've had interactions on Twitter (Connor and store)! Could it have been a post medical/ contract talks meeting with LCFC trip to the Highcross? I doubt it, but I'd love him to be at Leicester!!!! Great player! Fits the profile of what Pearson is looking for!

docho66 Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Of course I don't expect us to "afford" either his wage demand or Sunderland's valuation. I just found it interesting that he was in Leicester - trying to poke the fire, as it were!

Soar Fox Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Has Morrisons had it's day now? Pfffft! To be fair to him, Connor Wickham was in the Highcross today with his girlfriend.
Agent Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I'm a Chris Wood fan, not as much of a fan as I used to be mind. I claimed that if we managed to play Wood into form then he would be the best striker in the Championship, we never did play him into form but I stand by my comment. One or two things now bug me about Chris, mainly his inability to head the ball. He is far greater on the floor than in the air and is possibly our best finisher but for a man of his size he needs to be able to do more in the air. His wanting to chest everything grates on me to be honest. It appears that Chris Wood is not an important part of Nigel's plan as the strikers we are being linked with fall into the Chris Wood physical pile. Ulloa/Cardoza/Dutch powerhouse... these players play the role that Chris would be playing. I don't think he'll stick around, unfortunately. I really wanted it to work for him here.
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 30 May 2014 Posted 30 May 2014 Problem with both these players is they are technically good, strong, able to strike the ball well - but they both play like individuals with their heads down and lack the vision and intelligence to play in passing teams, so yes in that sense Wood is our Wickham
