Owen to Wigan?!

Recommended Posts

WIGAN TAKING THE MICHAEL!

WIGAN owner Dave Whelan is trying to sign England striker Michael Owen from Real Madrid in an astonishing £10m deal.

Multi-millionaire Whelan has made approaches to the Spanish giants and the unhappy star about the bid and wants an answer as soon as possible.

Whelan has told boss Paul Jewell he will try to land the star in one of the most incredible transfers of all time - and the chairman is putting his money where his mouth is.

The shrewd businessman thinks he can recoup the fee if Owen agrees to come - and he is willing to pay his £4m-a-year wages for a season in the meantime.

The chairman is willing to sign Owen for the Premiership new boys and then give him the option to leave if a bigger club comes in either at the next transfer window or next summer.

It is no publicity stunt as Whelan is deadly serious about persuading Owen to come to the JJB Stadium and stun the rest of football.

Wigan have been in contact with Owen, who was in the north west at the weekend, to find out more about his future - and discovered there are NO immediate takers.

Whether Owen would be willing to join - especially in a World Cup year - is obviously a major question. But money will be no object.

Real Madrid would also take Whelan's cash as they have had no concrete offer despite the interest from Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Whelan and Jewell are waiting on a reply. They have also made moves for Norwich's Dean Ashton and Trabzonspor's Turkish striker Fatih Tekke.

Owen has told friends he is worried about being stuck in Spain and not playing football until the new year, putting his England place in doubt.

The England ace is deeply hurt that Liverpool have been linked so strongly with him but have yet to make a move. He could even drop that idea himself soon.

Newcastle manager Graeme Souness would still take him, but that has yet to appeal to Owen who is hoping one of the so-called 'big four' come in.

While Jewell's team will be fighting for their lives it is ambitious thinking - and comes with practical get-out clauses if things go wrong.

Owen would at least be in the Premiership and playing. If Wigan struggled he could go in the next transfer window - or after the World Cup finals.

Whelan has shown he is willing to gamble and now it is down to whether Owen has the bottle to take on a huge gamble or sit and wait.

The England star told pals on the international trip that his options are limited and he would stay in Spain and go in January. But since then Wigan have come with a suggestion that few had ever imagined possible, but could yet prove his best return ticket home.

Stranger things have happened. At least they're showing some ambition.

it highlights the problem in football though, that even if you do have the money (which most clubs don't) it is difficult to attract the top players unless you are playing european football

Like everyone else Wigan wants to buy, they've got the money, but who would want to go to a club destined for relegation?

But if every player thinks like that no-one would go to newly promoted clubs, and newly promoted clubs would all almost certainly be relegated!

Having said that we are talking about Micheal Owen here - BUT I personally don't rate owen anymore, afew years ago YES without a doubt but now defiently not!

Owen is not good enough for teams he has been linked with such as Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, e.t.c.

He is a mid-table side player now! And god-knows why Sven still picks him.

Sven isn't keen on picking players who play week in week out in The Championship yet Sven is more than happy to pick a player who only comes on as a sub who is warming the bench week in week out...

I completely disagree - Owen is a top class striker who will get any team a load of goals. He's certainly good enough to play for Chelsea, Man U or Arsenal imo. He got 16 goals last season in Spain and he was a sub for most games, so that tally is very impressive. If he played for Chelsea he'd easily get 20-25 goals from the amount of chances they create.
