Owen To Newcastle

Recommended Posts

Newcastle have agreed a club-record transfer fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The club's current record fee stands at the £15million paid for Alan Shearer in 1996.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," said a statement on club website www.nufc.co.uk.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Earlier, Owen, 25, only declared himself willing to spend a season on loan at St James' Park, if his preferred option of a return to Liverpool failed to materialise.

He said: "I said that my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team and if not I would prefer to return to Liverpool.

"The president understood and said he would try to help me achieve this. If the transfer cannot be finalised in time I have agreed to go to Newcastle United but only on a one-year loan. I need to be playing regularly in World Cup year."

Newcastle are desperate to recruit a striker and have struggled through the first two games of the Premiership season with Alan Shearer on his own up front.

Owen revealed earlier this month he had held "brief dialogue with three or four Premiership clubs", and on August 8 the Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd admitted contacting Real Madrid with a view to a move.

Later that day Real spokesman Antonio Garcia Ferreras claimed Manchester United had also expressed an interest, a claim subsequently denied by the Red Devils.

On Tuesday Everton manager David Moyes revealed his club had spoken to Owen's representatives, but the player rejected a move to Goodison Park.

His heart is set on a move to Liverpool however, where he scored 158 goals in 297 games for the Reds, before leaving the club for Madrid last summer.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez insists his main priority is to sign a centre-back and already has Djibril Cisse, Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch as his frontline strikers.

"I want other players first, I am happy with my five strikers even now Milan Baros has gone," the Spaniard said after his side's 3-2 aggregate win over CSKA Sofia in the Champions League.

The move would be a popular one among the club's supporters, who idolised Owen during his time at the club.

He scored 16 goals for Real last season despite being used primarily as a substitute behind Raul and Ronaldo, and with Robinho and Julio Baptista now on board his prospects of first-team football diminished further.

Real Madrid director of communications Antonio Garcia Ferreras confirmed his club had agreed a fee with Newcastle for Owen and also reported there was still no offer from Liverpool for their former player.

He said: "Real Madrid and Newcastle United have reached the principles of an agreement on the conditions of Michael Owen's transfer to the English club.

"There is still no agreement between Michael Owen and Newcastle. At the moment we have not received any offer from Liverpool."

i think this will be a quality signing as Owen fits into Newcastles style of play andi think he will shine over here again.

i heard that they told him last week that he had one day to decide, obviously he didn't want to go there

I see. Well maybe they will try again? especially if Liverpool dont come in with an offer! I think for the sake of his England chances next year, he needs to play games week in week out and not sit on the bench!

yeh, i think madrid should have given him his chance, this is why it is a bad thing to have clubs who can buy who they like, waste of talent

Essien, Cole, Wright-Phillips all spring to mind. Cole has taken his chance, but i reckon he would have done a lot more at a club where he would have established his position in the side week in week out!

Souness says he is still confident of signing him. It would obviously be good for Newcastle and someone would probably sign him ater a year. I'm sure it is the better option for Owen rather than sitting on the bench all year.

wrong move owen, liverpool should have upped there game. the fans wanted him, the club wanted him, even jamie carragher said he wanted him back. is it only rafa benitez that didnt? crouch is over rated, morientes has yet to impress in english football. cisse + owen would be LETHAL! should have got him in.

Why is that a surprise? Have they had a run-in before then?

I think Owen has been left in no man's land and instead of braving it out for another season at Real he's chosen first team football and a definite place in the England squad. I don't think he should have returned to Liverpool, players rarely recapture the same form or relationship with a team they've played for before. Owen made a mistake in leaving Liverpool, but at 25 he's still got plenty of time to move his career up a gear. He'll break Charlton's record, which will mean he's had a successful career whoever he would have moved to.

Newcastle seem are attracting quality players at momnet Parker,Emre,Luque and now Owen but I am not sure if Soury (Souness) are right manager for them

Seconded! Souness is definitly not the man for the job! He has then players at his disposal but doesnt know how to use them effectivily!

he had the most odds to be 1st sacked way before the season started, now with 1 point, 1 draw, 3 losses & 0 goals the odds must be highly stacked against him. they have a decent team on paper, just cant put together a performance. LCFC ringing any bells?

mine would be

Given

Babayoro Boumsong O'Brien Carr

Parker

Emre Dyer

Luque

Shearer Owen

I mean midfielder diamond with Parker in slightly defensivee role Dyer on wing while Emre is tucked in not too far on wing and Luque as playermaker for Shearer and Owen, Bowyer have no place because of his attidue while Jenas will be useless as he is unhappy

Nice team. i also think that with that you have the option for Luque to push to the left if needed. Like when playing against a 5 man midfield, you would need Luque in the middle so i would just play him on the left.

As KC said, its a good team but i dont think Souness knows how to use his players as a squad!
