The Ministry of Defence turned large parts of the country into a giant laboratory to conduct a series of secret germ warfare tests on the public.

A government report just released provides for the first time a comprehensive official history of Britain's biological weapons trials between 1940 and 1979.

They were done on the South coast mainly. I was born in 51 but it seems a long way from there.

It's sad to say really that the greatest scientific advancements (in terms of the discoveries themselves and the speed at which they're made) are made when there's a real reason for human beings to want to kill each other in vast numbers - wartime, in other words.
