Some 20 city centre bus services are set to move to temporary stops when Leicester's Haymarket Bus Station closes ahead of a £13.5 million redevelopment in January.

The bus station, in Charles Street, will shut to the public from Sunday, 11 January, as the main phase of construction work begins on the scheme.

A block of shops on the corner of Belgrave Gate and Charles Street has already been demolished.

All bus services which currently use the station’s 12 existing stops will be affected by the closure.

The alternative city centre bus stops will be in nearby streets until the new bus station opens before Christmas 2015.

Some passengers have said they are worried buses will be delayed as a result of the temporary stops.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has admitted there will inevitably be some disruption.

He said: “Officers have worked closely with the bus companies to offer alternative city centre bus stops for those services which will have to move out of the station while this ambitious redevelopment takes place.

He said the temporary stops were as close to the bus station as possible.

He added: “The redevelopment of Haymarket Bus Station will significantly improve services for bus passengers in the city, and help transform this part of the city centre.

“By building a bigger bus station, with more space for buses to drop off and pick up, we can help reduce bus queuing and congestion and help speed up journey times, contributing to a more reliable service.

“The finished building will also provide a much more comfortable and attractive waiting area, doing away with the existing collection of stands, which are now looking very shabby and are barely fit for purpose.

Bus passenger Yussef Amjad, 23, from Mowmacre, said: “It might be a bit confusing for people having to finding their new stops at the start but it won’t take long to get used to it.”

Posters and leaflets giving details of the changes will be displayed at the bus station ahead of the closure, and on all affected buses.

The revamped station will have almost double the number of stands buses - increasing from 12 to 23.

It will also feature an attractive new concourse building which will provide modern facilities and the latest information systems for passengers.

The footpath on the opposite side of Charles Street will be widened and rebuilt and new seating and screens will be installed with new trees planted.

Bus passengers should continue to use the existing stands at Haymarket Bus Station up to and including Saturday, 10 January.

Traveline has information on all local bus services on 0871 200 22 33.

The Shopmobility service will also be relocated to the on the old ABC car park on Belgrave Gate when the Haymarket Bus Station closes.

Thet redevelopment project has been awarded £3.5million of Government funding with £10 million from the council itself.

They only in recent years done the place up, what a waste

Should find somewhere nearer to the Railway station, maybe the other end of Charles Street and have St Margaret's merged with it.

A proper transport hub.

If I want to get to the railway station using a bus. I'm cast adrift at St Margaret's with the option of a taxi or walking, I usually choose to walk which isn't easy with a heavy suit case. then they wonder why people prefer their cars.

People moaning that it will cause buses to be delayed.... They're always delayed so what difference would it make?! It's always one reason or another.

I can't see the necessity for the place to be done up it serves it's job well... If you do it up you may just attract homeless people wanting to stay in there lol

I use the 25/26 services fairly frequently and these days it can take about 15 minutes to get from Haymarket to the Belgrave roundabout on a weekday rush hour with all the road works. I can understand the roadworks causing problems but the biggest issue I have with Leicester bus services is their not being a 'travelcard' type ticket valid across all the different bus firms in Leicester, de-regulating the buses by the council was a massive fvck up IMO, you now have the situation of 2 bus companies operating the same route, different prices, timetables etc.... Sort it out Soulsby!!
