African Nations Pair Prove Their Value As Shocking Refereeing Denies City

Barclays Premier League
Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool 2
Gerrard 17′ (pen), 40′ (pen)

Leicester City 2
Nugent 58′, Schlupp 60′

Leicester City had to settle for a point after being robbed of three in an exceptional performance against Liverpool at Anfield. It was the two wingers who are departing for the African Cup of Nations who excelled as Ghanaian Jeff Schlupp (8.42) stormed his way to man-of-the-match number three of the season ahead of Algerian Riyad Mahrez (8.03) in second. Schlupp found the equaliser after David Nugent (8.02) scored a sensational goal 100 seconds earlier to get City back in the game. Nugent's goal capped an excellent 60 minutes after replacing Danny Drinkwater in the first-half, a performance which also earned him a place in the top three.

City played at great intensity throughout the game, arguably dominating proceedings until the closing stages. The overall team performance (7.11) reflected this as it breached the seven mark for the first time since September thanks to above average performances throughout the entire team. Leonardo Ulloa (6.08) was the lowest-ranked player for the first time this season but this was largely down to his arrival coinciding with Liverpool throwing the kitchen sink at the Leicester rearguard for the final ten minutes so he had little opportunity to make an impact.

Meanwhile Nigel Pearson has near full approval from the supporters again as he nears the 100% mark with the highest confidence rating (96.65%) since the Manchester United victory in September. His match rating (8.10) was equally as impressive as he was voted with a mark above seven for the first time since that game. Liverpool's performance at Anfield (4.55) came in just above previous opponents Hull City to finish as the second-worst opposition performance the voting support have seen this season, a fair assessment considering the manner in which they "earned" their point.

Consequently a special mention has to be given to the incompetence of referee Mike Jones on the day who received by far the worst rating given to any set of officials this season (1.51). It was the third time this season that Jones has refereed a City game with the draw against Everton (5.10) and defeat at Swansea (6.56) his other matches, but this one is clearly a game in which the officials can be pointed to for denying Leicester a much deserved and needed three points. Liverpool were awarded two penalties for handball, with the first from a cross by Raheem Sterling that hit captain Wes Morgan square in the face and a second that caused much debate among pundits as to what constitutes a deliberate handball. With 9 out of the 10 worst-voted refereeing performances coming since November (with the other being Mike Jones against Everton) and baffling decisions being made across the fixture schedule seemingly every week, it's only natural that the standard of refereeing is one of the main discussion topics as City remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
