Superb Dyer Completes Hattrick of Awards

Lloyd Dyer claimed his third man of the match award in as many games after a sensational performance against Leeds saw him voted the best City player in front of a large crowd and the sky cameras at the Walkers Stadium on Easter Monday. Steve Howard claimed the headlines with his winner but an all round top performance saw him finish just behind Dyer in second. Another impressive wing display from Max Gradel got him third spot.

Joe Mattock ended with the flop of the match award again after a less than impressive performance. Matty Fryatt's performance didn't win him any plaudits either, with Mattock and Fryatt being the only players to rate under a 7.

He didn't play that well, yet even if that was the best hes played it still means the rest of the team had a cracker and did better, probably because Lloyd Dyer stole the show on the left so Mattock had no say.

Dyer deserved this. He certainly has picked up his form in the last 3-4 games, right at a crucial time where we needed him the most.

Mattock, I'm afraid, was our weakest link once again.

He was skinned more times than fish at a Findus factory - he popped in a couple of decent crosses and stuck the boot in a bit, not sure it was his best outing this season by any stretch.

Even Morrison out of position was more solid than Mattock, and that says a lot.

It's quite concerning how frequently Mattock gets skinned by League One wingers.

I voted Howard as my MOTM but can't dispute that Lloyd deserved this. It's great to have the guy back in form for the last few games.

Abrasive Fox - Mattock certainly played better than against Hereford (hardly a great achievement) but the fact he got an average above 6 is testament to the fact that whilst he was better, everybody else had an absolute blinder of a match.

Well deserved by Dyer. His return to form has been dramatic. It's as if he simply prefers warmer-weather football.

I do think Saturday that he benefitted from having Gradel in the side because he made it that much harder for the opposition to double bank on him.

He may still be tightly marked but there are a lot of Leicester shirts around to help him now.

When I first noticed Dyer's form slipping it seemed at least in part because the opposition had singled him out as a dangerman and his effectiveness suffered as we became more cagey in our approach, at considerable cost to our form post-Christmas.

But with Gradel's re-emergence and a forward line of Howard, Fryatt and Dyer with Oakley/King behind them, the opposing back line each have enough trouble with their own opposite number without putting two men on Dyer.

I know it's all done zonally rather than man to man - and believe City's tendency to cramp one side as part of the zonal strategy tends to play into opponents' hands - but we do quickly make some width now when we have the ball and that makes serious problems for opposition defenders, particularly as Gradel seems to be reasonably free these days, knowing that Oakley can move wide if Gradel moves inside.

Anyway super "hat-trick" from Dyer and it's something of a pleasure to see our worst full-time performer against top opposition like Leeds getting a respectable 6.29. Mattock needs to use that as a bottom benchmark, to recognise why he showed improvement and to make sure his standard doesn't slip below that level.

To remain a prospect he has to find the strength, energy and confidence to keep getting both forward and back. He needs to study Evra.
