If the committee has any sense (and I'm sure that they do), I'm sure they'll realise just how ridiculous the idea of presenting that man with the NPP this year, next year or any year is anyway, regardless of events. That being said and has been said before, Kissinger got one so...

The meltdown on "Truth" Social will be entertaining, I'm sure.

Interesting discussion. Personally I think the veto system has run its course for similar reasons described here, but seeing as the five veto wielders likely think differently just getting rid of it first up likely wouldn't go down well. Perhaps a third option exists, for instance keeping the veto, but one veto is not enough to block a proposal - there has to be at least two, instead. Keep the abstention option to allow a little more flexibility in that case, but just one "no" is not enough to stop something going through. That would at least require more talking and cooperation as part of it all.

The more of a farce it is, the more it shows up both the heads of FIFA and the leading host nation. So bring on as much farce as possible, IMO.

Not sure if the world has changed, or just the way things are reported through social (and other) media, or both or other, but there certainty seems to be so much more stress and stressors around now compared to even a decade ago. That being said, what I've read about the way things are changing in terms of environment frankly terrifies me and should anyone else outside those totally detached.

The MGS2 Colonel monologue should really be preserved as a piece of cultural iconography, tbh. Maybe it was mostly luck but it's predicted the current situation we're in practically to a T.

Remember, folks: All mushrooms are edible, but some mushrooms are only edible once.

Nobel Peace Prize being handed out today. Those who say it will be devalued if Trump gets it clearly don't remember it being given to Kissinger.
-
And don't forget the slick PR teams to ensure that a lot of people don't even believe some of those abuses have even occurred. Terrible things are no less terrible simply because a plurality of people happened to vote for government that does them. IMO the only reason the UN is flawed in terms of its structure is because it lacks the enforcing teeth to be able to deal with the bigger national players.
-
Yeah, perhaps. I guess we'll find out in due course.
-
Yeah, considering the recent history, anything short of righteous cold antagonism would look that way tbh. Carney is shrewd, I think, but it is a bit frustrating that more leaders are choosing a softer approach rather than presenting a united front against Trump and telling him exactly what he is and, in diplomatic speak, to fvck off when needed.
-
Carney visiting the WH today, apparently. Hope he demonstrates the same attitude towards Felon#47 as the average Canada goose would.

Directly? Nothing. Indirectly through inference? The idea that he appears to consider an entirely "nonwhite" area as a source of discomfort for himself without mentioning if an entirely "white" area would make him feel the same way is a proper dog-whistle. Edit: to add to this and repeat a point made before, if someone like Jenrick clearly doesn't make any distinction between types of "brown faces" that he sees, why would anyone expect anyone else who thinks like him to do likewise when setting policy?

As discussed in the gen news thread, excellent news, and now we need such continual advances to either be joined by the US and Russia (among others) or for it to flat out trample them in its wake. A very great many lives depend on it.
-
Appreciate the useful info dump, both.

Pretty much agree here, I'll just add that though the bar is low, it seems to be too high for quite a few leading global players at the present time who seem all too happy to bring on the global consequences of increasing average temperatures.
-
Got it, thank you. That does seem wildly unnecessary, yes.
-
Can you elaborate on this some? I'm interested in hearing more about the economic arguments because AFAIC the only such argument that really matters on this particular issue is "invest now or pay much, much more later, in more than money".
-
I think the current drivers might stand at least something of a better shot than the alternatives who don't think there's a problem at all in spite of all the exacting scientific evidence.
-
Bit of both, I think. Also, I think what also matters here is intent. China are clearly directing a lot of effort into clean energy initiatives and it is obvious that they also intend to continue doing so until the job is done, whatever that takes, because they know that whatever the cost, the cost of inaction is higher. Something other nations might learn from them.
-
Thanks for that one, as you say, mixed news but good to see that landmark being reached. Also lots of reasons in there why China is leading the way and the Anglosphere is lagging behind while still looking down their noses at them.
-
Think this is relevant to current discussion.
-
Yep. Also, as has been mentioned here before, if someone like Jenrick clearly doesn't make any distinction between types of "brown faces" that he sees, why would anyone expect anyone else who thinks like him to?
