  1. And the Marshall Plan? It doesn't need to be altruistic to be helpful.
  2. Allies are not mates. Even Stalin admitted the Soviets could not have won without lend lease.
  3. So you don't think lend lease was vital to the UK and allies ?
  4. Not saying we owe anything to Trump and Co. Rather that when US was isolationist and not policing the world we were desperate to get them involved. Now there is alarm because of the prospect of withdrawal from Western European defence.
  5. Imagine if they hadn't provided the aid in the first place.
  6. Thank you for sharing. Very moving
  7. My original point was that Britain and Europe wanted and needed US involvement directly. Most governments act in self interest.
  8. Oh and don't forget lend lease before the US were at war in ww2
  9. Doesn't change that Britain and others were hugely relieved for their involvement. The US could have simply fought Germany in the Atlantic against U boats and fully concentrated on beating Japan but didn't.
  10. Mind the allies were certainly relieved when the US joined in both ww1 and ww2
  11. So much pressure on the side not to concede when we know we can't score. All about when we first go behind and then how many follow.
  12. My experience was the border between London Transport red buses and London Country green buses. Same buses but the seeing the different livery was exciting to my young mind
  13. European countries need to increase defence spending but we need the US at the heart of it
  14. Just wondering how many here have seen the 1967 film Robbery with Stanley Baker. There is a great scene when the the gang meet at a football match to discuss the proposed train robbery. Filmed at Brisbane Road at Orient v Swindon match. Back then Orient played in blue. Time capsule of 1960s football.
  15. Good to know Steve is doing ok
  16. I had a Secret Sam. More discreet as gun and ammo was carried in a briefcase James Bond style
  17. Hardly inspires confidence in her
  18. All knew the historical period we were playing in. No mixing up. I can remember after we had all seen Zulu how this was in vogue for reenactment before going back to ww2 or back to cowboys etc. If you had a toy gun adding caps elevated the whole game. I suppose these war games would be frowned upon now but none of us grew to be violent nutters. In fact knowing about the world wars etc gave me appreciation for a peaceful life that my parents didn't have
  19. I agree you need a blend. When we were good we had Mahrez but we also had Huth. You will remember when Vardy got sent off in that West Ham game. We dug in without losing our rag and Ulloa showed nerves of steel
  20. Not sure players blowing a gasket and getting a ban is helpful. As Lineker once said the best way to get your own back is to score a goal
  21. Yes. Funny how these things register as a kid
  22. It was unfortunate how our management was stingy regarding the money not paid to Gordon. I think we can be proud that he was a Leicester player when England won the world cup. I suppose his biggest club day was with Stoke when they beat Chelsea in the 1972 League Cup Final. One more recent memory is he was co commentator when we played Ath Madrid in the first leg in Spain. I remember his shout of joy when Ian Marshall scored. Should we have kept him and sold Shilts? Both great keepers and I can remember a young Peter giving outstanding performances so at the time letting Gordon go didn't seem the wrong decision.
  23. The 1986 film Lady Jane with Helena Bonham Carter is worth a look
  24. Thanks for confirming that payment was made. Agree about the court case
  25. I think the judge mentioned she and her girlfriend were at least partly responsible for the situation they found themselves. Will she be expected to pay for the damage to the cab I wonder?
