Doesn't change that Britain and others were hugely relieved for their involvement. The US could have simply fought Germany in the Atlantic against U boats and fully concentrated on beating Japan but didn't.

It was unfortunate how our management was stingy regarding the money not paid to Gordon. I think we can be proud that he was a Leicester player when England won the world cup. I suppose his biggest club day was with Stoke when they beat Chelsea in the 1972 League Cup Final. One more recent memory is he was co commentator when we played Ath Madrid in the first leg in Spain. I remember his shout of joy when Ian Marshall scored. Should we have kept him and sold Shilts? Both great keepers and I can remember a young Peter giving outstanding performances so at the time letting Gordon go didn't seem the wrong decision.
