Its a confused concept for sure. The counter is often made that if you or I as white English born people moved to almost any other part of the world, we would still be seen as English, as would our kids if they were bron to two White English parents. Its quite a western concept, and to our credit that we largely welcome people from all over the world as being able to become English (or American, or Australian, or New Zealander) in the way that I am not sure you would find in China or India or Japan say. Would you claim to be Indian if you lived in India, if your kids were born and raised in India? I think the locals would laugh at you. Britishness or Englishness (or American, or Australian) is in the main not seen as ethnicity but a belonging. Which makes it hard to define and easy to pick apart.

In their defense, I would imagine it extremely rare to arrive at a stabbing to find the actual attacker still there and calmly accusing the victim of a racist attack. Psychopathic behaviour imo, and out of the ordinary for the officers involved.

They showed more concern for the murderer's accusation of racist behaviour than of the victim staying he had been stabbed. Now I am no expert in these things, but I do think that of the two assertions the one about being stabbed might be a slightly higher priority for investigation in the moment by a trained officer of the law.

As an Atheist I don't see any religion justifying any kind of special treatment or carrying any kind of weapon under the law. If it is required by their belief, I am sure they could carry a blunt non pointy blade. Generally speaking we do not allow people to carry weapons in self-defence, so Sikhs should be no exception.

Hi Deb, while it doesn't have the world-famous landmarks, Perth / WA is a lovely place to visit, and the Qantas direct or various other options via the middle east or Singapore are pretty good. We live close to Freo which I would say is more interesting than staying in the city and a good base to explore. You can get the train into Perth easily when you want to for Museums, Elizabeth Quay, Kings Park - free buses (CAT) once you get into the city and the train is super cheap if you get a Smartrider card for $20 (contactless credit cards also work but more expensive). In Freo the Markets, lots of bars and restaurants, ferry to Rottnest to see some Quokkas and do some snorkelling. Nice beaches around, we like Cottesloe, Leighton to the north (both on the Freo - Perth train line) and South Beach and our home beach Coogee to the south - Cogee and Cottesloe both have a Shark net if you are concerned about swimming. For Margs you need a car - we usually use Bayswater Car Hire, usually the cheapest and a good choice of cars. The drive down is about 3hours + traffic, with some nice stop offs along the way. Once "Down South" as the locals call anywhere past Bunbury, lots to explore. Wineries everywhere (and plenty of Breweries too), beautiful beaches, Dunsborough, Busselton Jetty, Lighthouses, Caves. Head down to Augusta / Cape Leeuwin where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, or even over to Albany (about 4 hours). The Southern Ocean coast is incredibly beautiful. If you head north from Perth there a few interesting towns once you get out of the suburbs, a loop to Lancelin Sand Dunes, into Cervantes Lobster shack for lunch then to the Pinnacles toward sunset the light is spooky. If out of the suburbs you need to drive carefully from dusk onwards due to Kangaroos waking up and heading out. You can also get a coach trip to do this.
