The big 6 would very much like to sell the TV rights to their own games and not settle for a collective deal that shares the proceeds in a somewhat equitable manner across many clubs. It’s also very naive to think that any club outside the big 6 could grow a sustainable audience that could in any way compete with the sort of audience that the traditional elite clubs can attract just for being those clubs. You now, United have been dross for years now - doesn’t stop them being one of the most marketable and viewed clubs in the World.

We were always pressing in a 442 - the change at half time was to put Facundo on the right, McAteer on the left and El Kid down the middle… and wouldn’t you know, our second came via that switch!

He got better as the game went on didn’t he - lots of little scrappy bits of defending.

Delighted for McAteer and El Kid - their performances have deserved that!

It’ll be interesting to see what tweaks / instructions Ruud gives at halftime. Yes we’ve rode our luck, but we have defended in numbers, challenged pretty much every cross and made sure when they’re in the final third we’re close enough to keep the players head down - so we’ve earned some of that luck. If we can be a bit better on the ball and play a little more in their half early doors of the second half, it’ll do our confidence a world of good.

There’s very positive signs, despite being under pressure for most of this half. Defensively, we’ve defended in numbers, with a disciplined shape and structure - notably, we’re defending the width of our box (or narrower). Attacking wise - we’re struggling a consistent out ball when pinned back - but some of the interplay between our front four has looked good. Ultimately, as a base to move forward with - this isn’t bad.

The shape and movement is night and day from what Cooper had them doing.

Big call with Coady - he’s not been great either when he’s had minutes. I think many are being a little harsh on McAteer - I’m hoping he’ll surprise a few this evening.

Yeah, the midfield is realistically where most of this is going wrong - the two guys are outnumbered in there, have difficult decisions on how and when to press and can get played around far to easily. Plus, as you say, Ndidi is no Pirlo in possession either, so he needs an option close to him that is that type of player so he can give it off to them.

Well that was awful! But as a temporary manager, you’re asking a hell of a lot of the players by; 1.) Playing a completely different and technical formation. 2.) Picking players that haven’t played for quite a while / together 3.) Choosing to only play 2 central midfielders away from home against a team as organised and competitive as Brentford are. The criteria for this game had to be “keep it simple”.

Has to be the first time “You’re not singing anymore!” can be directed at a commentary team!

Bugger… but it’s notable the commentators didn’t give Wissa / Brentford a song.

He looks sexy in a turtleneck. The fans can shout “Ruuuuuuudddd!” He’s not Cooper. What more do you need to enjoy a little bit of positivity for a change.

Nah! He’ll gain plenty of momentum from simply not being Cooper from both the players and fans. This feels a good fit.
