Man jailed for 1986 murder acquitted after 38 years Dominic Casciani & Phil McCann BBC News Reporting from Royal Courts of Justice Jonny Humphries BBC News, Liverpool Published 13 May 2025, 13:04 BST Updated 12 minutes ago A man who has served 38 years in prison for the murder of a woman has had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal after new DNA evidence emerged. Peter Sullivan was jailed over the 1986 killing of 21-year-old barmaid Diane Sindall, who was subjected to a frenzied sexual attack in Birkenhead, Merseyside, as she walked home from a shift. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) - the statutory body set up to investigate potential miscarriages of justice - had referred Mr Sullivan's case back to the appeal court last year after fresh testing found a DNA profile pointing to an unknown attacker in semen samples preserved from the crime scene. Mr Sullivan, appearing on video-link from HMP Wakefield, sobbed and held his hand over his mouth as he was told he would be released. Who is Peter Sullivan and why was he jailed? Now aged 68, he is believed to be the victim of the longest miscarriage of justice involving a living prisoner in British legal history. Duncan Atkinson KC, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, had said his client agreed the DNA evidence undermined Mr Sullivan's conviction and there would be no application to seek a retrial. Judge Lord Justice Holroyde said the evidence "plainly did point to a sexual aspect of the attack on Miss Sindall" and the "inference was very strong" that DNA had belonged to the real killer. He continued: "There is no evidence to suggest more than one man was involved in the murder, and no evidence to suggest semen may have deposited in the process of consensual sexual activity." The judge said he had "no doubt it is necessary and expedient in the interests of justice" to admit the evidence of forensic scientists. "In the light of that evidence it is impossible to regard the appellant's conviction as safe." The court heard technology had only very recently been developed to the point where the semen sample, recovered from Miss Sindall's abdomen, could be tested for DNA. The hearing was told the DNA profile was not a match for Miss Sindall's fiancé at the time, while cross-contamination from the forensic investigator who collected the semen samples had been ruled out. Merseyside Police has since re-opened its investigation into Miss Sindall's murder but the force said searches of the national DNA database had not come up with any matches. More than 260 men have been screened and eliminated from the renewed investigation since 2023 A good example of why capital punishment should be avoided

Couldn't find anything re his employment in the search. I certainly can't remember him joining -
Nick Mashiter BBC Sport football news reporter Leicester loans manager David Fox is set to leave the club after just two weeks to join Plymouth Argyle. Sources have told BBC Sport the 41-year-old will become Argyle's new head of football operations as the club plots their return to the Championship. Fox finished his career with a three-year spell at Home Park, making 142 appearances, and returns after the club was relegated to League One on the final day of the season. Fox, who also played for Norwich, Blackpool, Colchester and Crewe, had previously been loans manager at Huddersfield and has only been at King Power Stadium a matter of weeks. A new head of recruitment is also expected to be named by Plymouth to replace Jimmy Dickinson, who is joining Bolton to reunited with former Argyle boss Steven Schumacher.

Further back The 1902 Ibrox disaster was the collapse of a stand at Ibrox Park (now Ibrox Stadium) in Govan (now part of Glasgow), Scotland. The 1902 Ibrox disaster was the collapse of a stand at Ibrox Park (now Ibrox Stadium) in Govan (now part of Glasgow), Scotland. The collapse caused the deaths of 25 supporters, and injuries to 500 more during an international association football match between Scotland and England on 5 April 1902 as part of the 1901–02 British Home Championship. Ibrox Park had completed construction less than three years before the incident and was hosting its first international fixture, with the crowd estimated to be over 68,000. The match was the first time that the ground had been used at more than half capacity since its opening. Scotland entered the game needing only to avoid defeat to win the British Home Championship title. During the first half of the match, a section of the newly built West Tribune Stand collapsed, dropping between 200 and 300 people to the concrete floor below. Two spectators were declared dead at the scene, and a further twenty-three died of injuries sustained in the incident soon after, the last victim dying three weeks later. Despite the collapse, the match was eventually resumed after a break as officials feared emptying crowds could interfere with rescue attempts and lead to further panic. The teams resumed the match, which ended in a 1–1 draw, although both the Scottish Football Association and the Football Association later agreed that the result should be voided. A replay was hastily organised and played a month later at Villa Park in Birmingham with all proceeds from the match being donated to a relief fund for victims of the disaster. The disaster led to an overhaul in stadium design, with wooden terraced stands being largely replaced by earth or concrete embankments.

Another forgotten one probably because it's Scottish The Ibrox Disaster, which occurred on January 2, 1971, was a football disaster that resulted in 66 deaths and over 200 injuries at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow during an Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic. The disaster occurred when a crush on a stairway during the match led to the deaths of 66 supporters. This was the worst football disaster in Britain until the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989. Here's a more detailed look: Cause: The disaster was caused by a crush on a stairway at the Copland Road side of the stadium. Impact: 66 people were killed and over 200 were injured in the incident. Context: The event occurred during an Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic, and the match was a high-profile derby. Consequences: The disaster led to changes in stadium safety regulations and a greater emphasis on crowd control in football stadiums. Legacy: The Ibrox Disaster is still remembered and mourned, with the families of those who died still struggling with the loss.

I remember it well we were at home watching Grandstand and they were showing it live until it became distasteful to watch so many people in real danger like it was some disaster movie scene.

My son in law his dad and brother are all born and bred Liverpool fans and their response to TAA leaving was "Yeah, not that bothered to be honest" and "Same, only sad part is we didn't get some £" Despite all the hatred on here for Liverpool fans they are thoroughly decent people very humble and magnanimous with respect to LCFC and football. It also applies to all the the Liverpool people I've met through them. There's so much tarring of everyone with the same brush on here and yet when it happens re being an LCFC fan the response on here is outrage.

Mikel Arteta: “Winning trophies is about being in the right moment in the right place. Liverpool have won the league with fewer points than what we had in the last two seasons. With the points of the last two seasons we would have two Premier League’s.”

The thrower must have part of each foot on the touch-line or on the ground outside the touch-line, and use both hands to deliver the ball from behind and over the head. The ball becomes in play as soon as it enters the field of play. Legal

As I see it they'll never fully resolve it Putin wont give up the Crimea and Zelensky doesn't have the authority to cede it to Russia. While the war continues Ukraine can't hold elections even then it would need a vote by the Ukrainians to give it to Russia and how do they decide which parts of Ukraine are still Ukraine and not Russian.
-
But that wouldn't be my view i'd be using someone else's opinion. Besides why should I spend time researching something I've not been following in detail all season. Even if that was acceptable how many fans do you think will go to that trouble.. If the votes aren't genuine then it's a mockery. Just because some people choose to not take the men's vote seriously doesn't mean this is justifiable. Anyway I've spent too much time on this these are my last comments on it.

Mine is having no talent, I'm more of a jack of all trades, master of none, even then not all trades.
-
There's no logical reason why they can't have two separate polls opening / closing at the same time. Can you give a reason why they've done it as a combined 'you must vote' in all categories? I'd like to vote for Vardy I have no idea which women to vote for it makes their vote and hence their winners a mockery.

I’m sure they get a lot of info off here.
