  1. Story of Leicester It's a busy day along Churchgate here in November 1988. What brings back memories for you in this photo? Do you remember shopping at places like Mays Electrical, or The Good Earth?
  2. Story of Leicester 6 January · In 1907 Harry Hardy Peach (1874–1936) founded Dryad Handicrafts, which made and sold cane furniture. This photo from 1953 shows their main shop which was at 42 St Nicholas Street, Leicester. It was Harry’s dream to open a museum of good quality craftwork, potentially in conjunction with the Leicester School of Art, as an inspiration for teachers and others. While this dream was never realised, the majority of his collection was given to Leicester Museum and Art Gallery in 1969 and now forms the Dryad Collection, with the finest examples of 20th century cane and basketwork in the UK. See the collection and a wall-sized mural of their showroom on St Nicholas Street at the museum’s current Dryad Basketry exhibition: https://www.leicestermuseums.org/Dryad-Basketry Do you or does someone you know have any connections to the Dryad Handicrafts collection in Leicester? Or maybe they used to shop at their St Nicholas Street store before the area was redeveloped? Let us know in the comments below… #StoryofLeicester

  5. Our staff had their own canteen with waitresses and comfy armchairs to relax in. The shop floor had to provide their own cutlery and then wash them ina bowl on the counter when they’d finish. They weren’t even allowed in the office areas. As an apprentice we got to work in both areas mainly the drawing office. Even in there the women were classed as tracers not draughtsmen.
  6. We had this when I was an apprentice, the 'staff' got served at their desks with a cup and saucer, the shopfloor mob had to bring their own mugs and wash them after. Couple of events, the tea wasn't flowing one day it transpired there was a dishcloth in the bottom of the urn, another time the tea was all greasy with it floating on the top of the brew in the cups, someone had topped up a bowl of lard with sugar. Favourite snack was battered potato slice in a cob.
  7. That's what they're hoping for but if and when it happens they'll be threatening yellow/red cards for anything controversial - They want it both ways.

  12. But if they have ambitions to be influential then they'd surely want to be aiming for a cabinet post thus anyone can see the abuse they get so yes you don't have to be known or even an MP to be put off being one. I'm sure there's plenty of abuse hurled locally that never makes the news. Even local and parish councillors get abused.
  13. I think you may have misunderstood my point. I wasn't defending him my point was this the standard you'll get because of the abuse MPs and Refs get, standards will fall if no good people want to do those jobs
  14. You win nothing with kids unless you're Man U plus refs.
  15. It's a bit like referees but maybe the media and the public are to blame for their verbally aggressive, brutish and sometimes physical attacks on them. I wouldn't want to be either.
  16. Yes or No? https://www.sportbible.com/football/football-news/fa-cup-man-city-leyton-orient-fan-reaction-830004-20250208 Fans claim the ‘game is gone’ after seeing what happened during half-time of Leyton Orient vs Man City game It didn't go down well with fans. Jack Kenmare Jack Kenmare Leyton Orient captain Dan Happe took part in a controversial half-time interview during their FA Cup fourth round clash against Manchester City. Richie Wellens' side, who currently sit seventh in League One, took an unexpected lead at Brisbane Road when Tottenham loanee Jamie Donley spotted Stefan Ortega off his line from 50 yards out. Donley let fly and Ortega tried his best to backtrack, but the ball hit the crossbar before hitting the goalkeeper and into the net as thousands of Orient fans celebrated a historic FA Cup moment. To their credit, Wellens' side went on to defend their slender lead against Premier League champions Manchester City, going into the break with a one goal advantage. And moments after referee Darren Bond blew his whistle for half-time, Orient defender Happe was asked for his thoughts on what happened during the opening 45 minutes in an interview with the BBC. Here's how fans on social media reacted to the scenes. One said: "Dan Happe getting interviewed at half time on the BBC. Does the manager not want him in the dressing room?" and another wrote: "Half time match interviews isn't football." A third commented: "Half time interviews with players on the pitch before they’ve even had a chance to get down the tunnel. Get in the bin." A fourth wrote: "Why do the BBC believe its appropriate to interview the captain of the lower division team even before he's got off the pitch at half time. Try f*****g doing that to the City captain or Guardiola. The disrespect is unbelievable." A fifth added: "What the f*** is this half-time interview about by @BBCSport leave the f*****g players alone while they're playing. That was ridiculous." Away from the FA Cup and half-time interviews were proposed by the Premier League earlier this season as part of several planned broadcasting changes. Back in November, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler gave a half-time interview live on Sky Sports during his side's Premier League clash with Manchester City. According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League sent a list of three initiatives for its 20 clubs to review earlier this season. It was claimed that broadcasters would be able to pick from a list of five players or coaches picked by the club, and would ask no more than three 'positive' questions during the course of the short interview. The report added that plans were in place for the initiative to be brought in from next season onwards, but it appears that those plans have been brought forward or are being implemented on a trial basis. Thoughts on the idea of a half-time interview during games? Let us know in the comments.
  17. https://insidefutbol.com/2025/02/08/frightening-pace-club-boss-pleased-to-have-leicester-city-loan-star/673770/ ‘Frightening Pace’ – Club Boss Pleased To Have Leicester City Loan Star 08/02/2025 - 19:57 GMT Pranoy Prakash Cardiff City boss Omer Riza has insisted that not many managers would take a chance on Leicester City loan star Will Alves, but he did as he knows the teenager’s character. The 19-year-old winger, who signed a loan deal with the Championship side for the remainder of the season from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team, made just one appearance for the Foxes in the Premier League this season. Alves, who previously worked with Riza as part of the England youth set-up, reunited with the Cardiff boss when he joined the Bluebirds. The Bluebirds boss asserted that his signing of Alves might be seen as a gamble, as he feels most managers would not attempt to sign an inexperienced player in the position Cardiff are in, but added that his side need speedy players like the Foxes’ loanee who can frighten the opposition. He is convinced that Alves will be an impactful player for the Bluebirds, as he knows the personality of the player very well. “We need players who have frightening pace that can scare the opposition”, the boss said at a press conference. “Will can do that. “He needs to be weaned in, he’s not played a lot of senior football and maybe not a lot of managers would have taken a punt on someone with his profile at the moment. “But I’ve worked with him and know what he’s got and the character he is. “It’s nice to give people the opportunity and hope they will repay you with energy, intensity and respect. “I’m sure he will do that and be very impactful, he is a very exciting young player who fans will really like”, he added. Alves, who has Portuguese heritage, has turned out for England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 level.

  21. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/leicester-citys-updated-premier-league-9929963 Leicester City's updated Premier League squad leaves space for transfer and adds Arsenal signing Leicester City's 25-man squad list for the second half of the Premier League has been published, with Woyo Coulibaly coming in and Hamza Choudhury dropping out after his loan move ByJordan Blackwell 12:14, 8 FEB 2025Updated14:06, 8 FEB 2025 Leicester City’s updated Premier League squad has been published and one space remains empty for a potential free signing. Clubs have had to submit their squad lists following the completion of the January transfer window and City have made just one alteration. New signing Woyo Coulibaly comes in, while Hamza Choudhury makes way, the homegrown midfielder out on loan at Sheffield United for the remainder of the season. It means City have once again filled just 24 of their 25 spots. Should they wish, it means they can add a free agent to the squad for the second half of the Premier League season. But with the club working to Profit and Sustainability Rules and keen not to add any players to their squad that didn’t improve the 11, a deal is unlikely. City have chosen not to include centre-back Harry Souttar in the squad following his return from Sheffield United. While he’s expected to be out for the season with an Achilles injury, he won’t be able to feature if he does return to fitness. Ruud van Nistelrooy actually has a first-team squad of 27 players to choose from, but three of those – Bilal El Khannouss, Facundo Buonanotte and the injured Abdul Fatawu – are born after January 1, 2003, are so are all eligible for the unlimited Under-21s list. The likes of Sammy Braybrooke and Jake Evans are also on that list, but not Jeremy Monga, as he is too young to be on either a pro or scholar contract. The Under-21s includes one new player. Eighteen-year-old box-to-box midfielder Bless Akolbire appears to have permanently joined the club from Arsenal. He has made two appearances for City’s Under-18s over the past couple of months. City’s senior squad list (* indicates homegrown): Jordan Ayew, Conor Coady*, Woyo Coulibaly, Patson Daka, Bobby De Cordova-Reid*, Odsonne Edouard, Wout Faes, Mads Hermansen, Daniel Iversen*, James Justin*, Victor Kristiansen, Stephy Mavididi*, Kasey McAteer*, Wilfred Ndidi, Caleb Okoli, Ricardo Pereira, Oliver Skipp*, Boubakary Soumare, Jakub Stolarczyk*, Luke Thomas*, Jamie Vardy*, Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ward*, Harry Winks*. City’s under-21 squad list: Maxwell Adedeji, Bless Akolbire, Mirsad Ali, Olabade Aluko, Will Alves, Bobby Amartey, Stevie Bausor, Sammy Braybrooke, Logan Briggs, Facundo Buonanotte, Henry Cartwright, Joe Corden, Brandon Cover, Will Daniels, Alpha Diallo, Ryan Donnelly, Jake Donohue, Kaleb Dyke, Bilal El Khannouss, Jake Evans, Oli Ewing, Abdul Fatawu, Alfie Fisken, Harry French, Harvey Godsmark-Ford, Michael Golding, Kevon Gray, Ben Grist, Deniche Hill, Lorenz Hutchinson, Jayden Joseph, Reiss Khela, Josh King, Bartosz Kosiorek, Will Lawrence, Jahmari Lindsay, Liam McAlinney, Lewis McNab, Tommy Neale, Ben Nelson, Laolu Omobolaji, Toby Onanaye, Kirsten Otchere, Louis Page, Kian Pennant, Chris Popov, Amani Richards, Harry Sutherington, Silko Thomas, Tom Wilson-Brown, Joe Wormleighton.
