Paraguay gave them a pretty unique challenge in baking conditions and although it wasn't 'easy' for France they never at any point looked like they wouldn't win it either. I was quite anti them going into the tournament, but even Deschamps who plays pretty handbrake football a lot of the time won't trip them up this time. Spain will be their hardest test if it happens but I still expect France to come through.

The talk of 11 signings - it's up my street, but if they make 6 permanent signings (who have kicked a ball before) I'll be amazed. We've never been good at doing things in bulk. Lots of it seems to hinge on departures which we're famously dreadful at, proven again by that Skipp to Middlesbrough thing. Unless we've got decent money for Cartwright I think that's another error. We've been awful at squad construction for years. Having him as 4th choice would've been fine and a cheap way to do it.

The Pearson comparison falls down because the track record of himself and LCFC 2024 onwards is completely different. Pearson made signings like this as supplementary signings, often late in a window on top of an already functioning team. If that's what Ings is, fair enough. But this is Aiyawatt, Rudkin and Glover we're dealing with here. The track record for them isn't pretty. I'd want another two strikers on top of this, maybe one if we're seeing Evans as a striker (which I'm not sure he actually is?). I honestly would not put it past them to sign Ings and Chaplin and them treat that as our striker options for the season. Also the point about the contract wasn't that we should be offering more, it's that people's immediate reaction is relief about how little we have to endure this one for rather than it actually being a good addition. I don't even disagree with them, but that reaction is fairly telling. We'll know for sure by September but selling a young midfielder to Bradford, bringing in a player with six nineties a season for the last five years and Choudhury plastered everywhere. Alarm bells ringing for me.
