Haydos Posted 23 April 2015 Posted 23 April 2015 Right, so my car's been for its MOT and needs 2 new front brake pads and 1 new brake disk. Apparently the the wheel nut key/locking wheel nuts (thing you need to remove the wheels) is nowhere to be found in the car and when I bought it from the Penagon dealership a year ago (Car is a Peugeot 207, dealership is Nissan) I was obviously unaware of whether this was the case or not. This is the first time the car has had any work done on it since I purchased it and it appears that they have sold me the car without this piece of equipment (without it the wheel nuts will need chiseling off and replacing) and it will cost me parts, labour and possibly another MOT (could be upwards of £100 altogether). It had an MOT and service before I bought it so the original dealership were the last people to touch it leading me to believe they have misplaced it and not supplied me with one. 1) The garage that just MOT'd the car said they have not removed the wheels already for the MOT. Would this definitely be true? 2) Do the original dealership have any obligation (legal or otherwise) to sort this out for me? (either themselves or by me billing them as they have obviously ****ed up here) 3) How would you got about this?
Soar Fox Posted 23 April 2015 Posted 23 April 2015 I lost mine when I had a BMW a few years ago, I bought something from Halfords for about £15 that had a reverse thread on a nut. The garage you bought it from will probably say it was in the car somewhere when they sold it you.
DeclanMC Posted 23 April 2015 Posted 23 April 2015 You can usually just buy them online for your car. I'd def give the dealer a call though, I'd imagine they'd be reasonable about it seeing as it's the first time you've had work done on your wheels since purchasing it.
Haydos Posted 23 April 2015 Author Posted 23 April 2015 Ring the dealership, be polite with them and explain your predicament and ask for advice. As they're a main dealer they should be understanding. Failing that, do you know if the wheels/locknuts are Peugeot or aftermarket upgrade?? If original then maybe a Peugeot dealer might be able to help .... Sturgess were very helpful when we had a similar missing part with our Jag !! Cheers. I did ring the dealer but their sales manager needed to speak to his manager. I'm calling back tomorrow so it could be fine but I thought I'd preempt it here. They're original Peugeot wheels but the guy at the MOT garage made it sound like they were unique, not just to the model but to that car, so people couldn't nick wheels. I'll see what develops tomorrow but I'm not really clued up on what the device is but the garage and the dealership made it sound like the was only one key-type thing for it.
yorkie1999 Posted 23 April 2015 Posted 23 April 2015 I'd like to add, be sure to change both discs and both sets of pads.
Haydos Posted 23 April 2015 Author Posted 23 April 2015 I'd like to add, be sure to change both discs and both sets of pads. How come? Both pads are being changed but they only mentioned 1 disk. I've only done 4000 miles and it was mot'd and serviced before I bought it. Does this sound reasonably normal?

Does this sound reasonably normal? I'd get both disks done too, the old ones will be warped slightly and will wear your new pad quicker. It won't cost much more in labour they are already doing 95% of the work.

potter3 Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 Most common locking wheels nuts have only a few variations iirc, so a dealership can usually get a matching key pretty easily Also. they're only really a deterrent to casual thieves, when I had some without a key I just banged a slightly too small socket on, worked fine. Then my next car had some weird aftermarket ones, the garage had to weld a nut onto each one so they could remove them, didn't cost anything like £100 though, more like £30-40 including a new set. They don't remove wheels for an MOT, in fact I'm not sure they're even allowed to.
Filbert_Ross Posted 25 April 2015 Posted 25 April 2015 this happened to me, had no idea what they meant when they asked me for lock&key or something for my wheels. They managed to get the bolt off each wheel somehow without it in the end and replaced it with a generic bolt. I found what they were asking for in the ashtray about a year later.
Haydos Posted 25 April 2015 Author Posted 25 April 2015 Sorted, didn't cost too much more in the end, still a pain in the arse. Got some new nuts and a key now so should be alright in future.
JadeFalcon Posted 10 May 2015 Posted 10 May 2015 £100 to weld a piece of pipe onto the nut and turn it. they are having a laugh
Sir Fynwy Posted 10 May 2015 Posted 10 May 2015 £25 for this http://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-emergency-locking-wheel-nut-remover-set-4-pieces/94826
Guest Col city fan Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 I got a slightly different problem. I've lost the spare key to my mothers Renault Kangoo. It was a 'blip' type. We still have the main key. How do I go about getting a replacement spare? I've read all sorts of stuff about having to have it coded to the car and taking the car into a Renault dealer and it costing about an hundred quid etc.. Anyone any helpful advice on this?

With all of the car paperwork documents etc. there should be a credit card size piece of plastic that has a code on the front. This will be required to program a new key to work with your car. It will probably have instructions on the reverse explaining to go to a dealership with the code and get them to make you a new key. Of course they charge what they want and it can be quite expensive because you have no choice of where to go and need to go to a (in your case) Renault dealership

It won't be cheap and if you get change out of a ton you have done well. I don't think you have any other option from the main dealer but might be worth trying a Renault specialist.
Guest Col city fan Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 Cheers for the heads up lads. And you're right..Over 200 quid! The cheating, scummy rip off merchants..
Sir Fynwy Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 These might be cheaper http://www.rapidlocksmith.com/renault_key_specialist_118.html
