Season Summary (Part 4) - Player-by-Player Review

lcfcratings.wordpress.com

1st and LCFC Ratings Player of the Season : Esteban Cambiasso

Minutes Played: 2690
Rating & Rank: 6.61 | 4th
Best & Worst: 8.71 - Swansea City (H) | 4.29 - Swansea City (A)
Awards: Man of the Match - 8; Player of the Month - 2

Leicester City signing a man who boasts a CV of Independiente, River Plate, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and 50+ caps for Argentina generated much excitement. It was quickly justified as Cambiasso made his debut against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium and put in a man-of-the-match performance (8.20), followed by a pivotal role in the famous victory over Manchester United (8.59) on his home debut to instantly become a hero at Leicester.

Like the rest of the squad, Cambiasso's form dipped during the long winless streak. However he was nothing short of sensational throughout the "great escape" at the end of the season. Performances against West Ham (8.60), Swansea (8.73) and QPR (8.67) were particularly memorable as he claimed the LCFC Ratings Player of the Season, leading City fans desperate to see the midfield maestro sign a contract for next season.

2nd : Robert Huth

Minutes Played: 1254
Average Rating & Rank: 7.10 | 5th
Best & Worst: 8.60 - Southampton (H) | 5.76 - Tottenham Hotspur (A) (Prem)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1; Player of the Month - 1

Experienced centre-back Huth didn't play his first game until mid-February but was arguably one of the most important figures in Leicester's escape, his best game coming in the 2-0 win against high-flying Southampton (8.60). With an average of 7.44 from West Ham onwards and Chelsea (5.96) his only real blip, City fans will be hoping that Pearson can secure his services for next season.

3rd : Marcin Wasilewski

Minutes Played: 2392
Average Rating & Rank: 6.43 | 4th
Best & Worst: 7.95 - Aston Villa (H) | 4.65 - Shrewsbury Town (H) (LGC)
Awards: Man of the Match - 3; Player of the Month - 2

Many doubted whether 34-year old Marcin Wasilewski could hack Premier League football. However his experience, solidity and know-how quickly shone through as he left many established Premier League attackers not knowing what hit them, with a tackle on Ayoze Perez in the 3-0 win over Newcastle particularly memorable. Two out of three man-of-the match awards won by Wasilewski were low scoring - 6.75 v Man Utd (A) & 6.20 v WBA (H) - suggesting he tends to be one of the more consistent performers in poor team displays.

4th : Kasper Schmeichel

Minutes Played: 2314
Average Rating & Rank: 6.34 | 7th
Best & Worst: 9.00 - Burnley (A) | 3.59 - Liverpool (H)
Awards: Man of the Match - 4

Kasper Schmeichel is so often mentioned in the same breath as his father but can surely now be deservedly called a Premier League goalkeeper in his own right. Despite some shaky performances in the first half the season up to his injury in December, Kasper was inspired on his return and with an average of 7.35 from West Ham onwards including man-of-the-match performances against Burnley (9.00) and Sunderland (7.85), he was undoubtedly a key factor in Leicester's safety.

5th : Marc Albrighton

Minutes Played: 1200
Average Rating & Rank: 6.58 | 6th
Best & Worst: 8.41 - QPR (H) | 4.23 - Aston Villa (A) (Prem)
Awards: Man of the Match - 2

One of the themes of the season was City fans pleading for Marc Albrighton to be given a run in team. In 2014, his average of 4.94 probably didn't help his cause although he didn't play any longer than 58 minutes in any of his six appearances. However he was given a chance in the run-in and he seriously excelled, scoring an average of 7.53 over nine appearances from April onwards, also not rating any lower than 6.99 during this spell.

6th : Jamie Vardy

Minutes Played: 2493
Average Rating & Rank: 6.24 | 7th
Best & Worst: 9.68 - Man Utd (H) | 3.42 - Man Utd (A)
Awards: Man of the Match - 5; Player of the Month - 1

Jamie Vardy capped his rise to stardom with an England appearance at the end of the season. On recent form it cannot be doubted that it was a deserved reward for his improvement over the season. From Spurs away onwards Vardy averaged 7.72, playing arguably the most important role in City's safety. However many would have not seen it coming with an average of 5.68 up to that point. His season highlight by far has to be an incredible 9.68 against Manchester United, which saw him play a key part in all five goals.

7th : Riyad Mahrez

Minutes Played: 2384
Average Rating & Rank: 6.16 | 7th
Best & Worst: 8.40 - Southampton (H) | 4.01 - Aston Villa (A) (FAC)
Awards: Man of the Match - 6; Player of the Month - 1

Brilliant as his best, totally ineffective at his worst. There is little doubt that his season was affected by travelling to the African Cup of Nations. Being a regular higher-placed player before the tournament with an average ranking of 5th, he dropped to an average of 9th after the tournament, regularly featuring in the bottom three. He was second only to Cambiasso in the number of man-of-the-match awards won, although only three of these awards were in his top 10 performances - Arsenal away (8.11), Hull home (7.71) and Sunderland home (7.20).

8th : Wes Morgan

Minutes Played: 3827
Average Rating & Rank: 6.10 | 7th
Best & Worst: 8.40 - Everton (H) | 3.25 - Liverpool (H)
Awards: Man of the Match - 3; Player of the Month - 1

Captain Morgan played more minutes than any other City player by some distance this season. The Jamaican international appeared to adapt quickly to to Premier League football with his first five games averaging 7.97. After faltering badly in the middle of the season with February/March a particularly bad period (4.71), the introduction of experienced defender Huth appeared to relieve the pressure on the captain towards the end of the season as he averaged 7.05 during the run-in.

9th : Liam Moore

Minutes Played: 1226
Average Rating & Rank: 6.15 | 6th
Best & Worst: 8.17 - Everton (H) | 4.02 - Swansea City (A)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1

Having not played since January, many seem to have forgotten the role Liam Moore played at the beginning of the season. Despite a poor run in October/November (5.00) which lost him his place in the team, Moore was excellent alongside Morgan at the beginning of the season with very good performances against Everton (8.17), Arsenal (8.03), Man Utd (7.95) and Stoke (7.91).

10th : Jeff Schlupp

Minutes Played: 2915
Average Rating & Rank: 6.03 | 8th
Best & Worst: 8.42 - Liverpool (A) | 3.69 - Newcastle United (A)
Awards: Man of the Match - 5

Capable of the sublime to the ridiculous, it's surprising to find the player with the second-highest amount of minutes on the field so far down the list. Jeff's season was full of ups and downs. Around half of his performances were below the 6 mark but he had a golden period over the New Year where performances against Liverpool (8.42) and Tottenham twice (8.13 & 7.73) showed everyone what he's capable of.

11th : Andy King

Minutes Played: 1612
Average Rating & Rank: 5.97 | 8th
Best & Worst: 8.56 - Swansea (H) | 3.59 - Manchester United (A)
Awards: None

Having been at the club since 2004, Andy King deserved his shot at Premier League football. It's been a mixed bag with King finding himself ranked in the bottom three on matchday no less than 10 times this season. He has shown signs of being up to the level required, with performances against Swansea (8.56), Everton (8.02) and Chelsea (7.62) his highlights but the Welsh international needs to show this level more consistently.

12th : Matty James

Minutes Played: 2239
Average Rating & Rank: 5.97 | 7th
Best & Worst: 7.34 - Man Utd (H) | 4.17 - Aston Villa (A) (Prem)
Awards: None

Never terrible, never superb. Matty James is the midfielder who kept things ticking over with a season high match rating of 7.34 not the most impressive. After getting to grips with the level required, he'll be devastated to have suffered a serious knee injury that will keep him out into the start of next season.

13th : Leonardo Ulloa

Minutes Played: 2740
Average Rating & Rank: 5.95 | 8th
Best & Worst: 8.94 - Man Utd (H) | 3.68 - Crystal Palace (H)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1; Player of the Month - 1

After a flying start to the season with an average of 7.83 from his first five games and 11 Premier League goals over the season, long periods of ineffectiveness followed for Ulloa with little to fall back on when the goals dried up. Between the Manchester United and Swansea home matches in September and April, Ulloa only scored above seven in the league on one occasion - at home to Tottenham Hotspur (7.02) - averaging just 5.12 throughout this period.

14th : Danny Drinkwater

Minutes Played: 1681
Average Rating & Rank: 5.88 | 9th
Best & Worst: 8.42 - Man Utd (H) | 3.64 - Man Utd (A)
Awards: None

Last season's Player of the Season will be disappointed he was not able to get close to the same level this season. With only three performances over the 7.00 mark and no appearances in the top three on matchday, Drinkwater and the fans know he's capable of better.

15th : Ritchie de Laet

Minutes Played: 2208
Average Rating & Rank: 5.91 | 9th
Best & Worst: 8.42 - Man Utd (H) | 3.64 - Man Utd (A)
Awards: None

Despite being given plenty of opportunities, Ritchie De Laet has never fully managed to establish himself this season. The Belgian was only ranked in the top 5 on four matchdays, but made the bottom five 14 times. De Laet will need to step up his game this season as Marc Albrighton seems to have made the right wing-back spot his own.

16th : David Nugent

Minutes Played: 1980
Average Rating & Rank: 5.73 | 8th
Best & Worst: 8.02 - Liverpool (A) | 3.13 - Swansea (A)
Awards: None

David Nugent simply didn't perform to a high enough level consistently this season. The Merseyside-born Everton fan performed best in the north-west against Liverpool (8.02) and Man Utd (7.96) but only rated above 7.00 on three other occasions, finishing in the bottom five no less than 14 times and joining Paul Konchesky as the lowest voted player most frequently (5).

17th : Danny Simpson

Minutes Played: 1463
Average Rating & Rank: 5.46 | 9th
Best & Worst: 6.97 - Aston Villa (A) (Prem) | 3.18 - Aston Villa (A) (FAC)
Awards: None

Despite the mid-season clamour for Simpson to play, it was fairly clear why he'd not been given an opportunity. Without a single performance over the 7.00 mark, Simpson's short run in the team between December and February was hardly memorable with an average of 5.46. Consequently there is little concern from the City faithful over what action may be taken against him after being convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

18th : Paul Konchesky

Minutes Played: 2705
Average Rating & Rank: 5.31 | 10th
Best & Worst: 7.85 - Man Utd (H) | 2.19 - West Ham (A)
Awards: None

The early-summer signing of Christian Fuchs suggests we may have seen the last of Paul Konchesky. It would be disrespectful to dwell on his performances this season as he's been a solid contributor to the progress made by the club and who knows how much his experience is valued behind the scenes. Having never made the top three in 29 appearances, he'll probably believe himself that it's time to move on.

Ben Hamer

Minutes Played: 965
Average Rating & Rank: 6.30 | 6th
Best & Worst: 7.82 - Stoke (A) | 4.78 - Tottenham (H)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1

Dean Hammond

Minutes Played: 828
Average Rating & Rank: 6.27 | 10th
Best & Worst: 7.71 - Chelsea (A) | 3.70 - Swansea (A)
Awards: None

Andrej Kramaric

Minutes Played: 788
Average Rating & Rank: 6.25 | 8th
Best & Worst: 8.10 - Arsenal (A) | 4.37 - Man Utd (A)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1

Mark Schwarzer

Minutes Played: 768
Average Rating & Rank: 5.61 | 7th
Best & Worst: 7.82 - Stoke (A) | 4.78 - Tottenham (H)
Awards: Man of the Match - 1

Anthony Knockaert

Minutes Played: 567
Average Rating & Rank: 5.35 | 10th
Best & Worst: 7.70 - Aston Villa (H) (Prem) | 3.59 - Shrewsbury (H) (LGC)
Awards: None

Matthew Upson

Minutes Played: 493
Average Rating & Rank: 5.24 | 9th
Best & Worst: 6.14 - Arsenal (A) | 4.08 - Tottenham (A)
Awards: None

Chris Wood

Minutes Played: 269
Average Rating & Rank: 5.14 | 11th
Best & Worst: 7.26 - Everton (H) | 3.59 - Southampton (A)
Awards: None

Tom Lawrence

Minutes Played: 158
Average Rating & Rank: 4.87 | 12th
Best & Worst: 6.60 - Newcastle (H) (FAC) | 4.26 - Hull City (H)
Awards: None

Gary Taylor-Fletcher

Minutes Played: 118
Average Rating & Rank: 4.56 | 12th
Best & Worst: 4.74 - Chelsea (A) | 4.38 - Shrewsbury (H) (LGC)
Awards: None

James Pearson

Minutes Played: 97
Average Rating & Rank: 3.59 | 13th
Best & Worst: 3.59 - Shrewsbury (H) (LGC)

Stuliasz,

I have to say a big thank you to you for all of this. It looks like it has been a lot of work for you. I have really enjoyed reading these reviews and all the comments after.

Cheers mate. You are awesome!

Great work on all these thanks.

Think fans got a harsh downer on Nugent. He always seems to rank so poorly. He had some very poor performances this season granted but some very good ones too. Think we generally looked good with him in the team with his link up play. Can't imagine him having a huge role next season but he's done so much for the club so I'll always be a fan.

Same goal tally as the dearly beloved Vardy it might also be pointed out, in less appearances.

A big thank you, just doing the simple MOM poll was enough for me so I can't imagine how you managed to put this all together.
