Guest Posted 3 August 2015 Posted 3 August 2015 I'm thinking about spending some time in Bilbao or the surrounding area, just curious what the weather is like there. I hear it is milder than Southern Spain, but the humidity levels look quite high. Anybody been there? During the summer?
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 3 August 2015 Posted 3 August 2015 Yeah, I've lived in Santander, not far off. Weather is not far off what it is here, in summer albeit a bit hotter, so more like 25 degrees, but very humid and you will have cloud coming over too. Many Spaniards from Madrid go there to escape the heat so.....

It will be hot at this time, but the north has occasional rain, especially in Los Picos. Best part of Spain, imo.

ousefox Posted 3 August 2015 Posted 3 August 2015 I was around there end of August last year and the weather was comfortable. It rained a bit of night. San Sebastian is definitely worth a visit. It will be hot at this time, but the north has occasional rain, especially in Los Picos.Best part of Spain, imo. It's only the nicest part of Spain if you haven't visited the South.

ousefox Posted 3 August 2015 Posted 3 August 2015 But I have. I like Andalucia, too, but I prefer the north. I'm surprised. I like all of Spain but it's hard to beat Seville, Granada and Cordoba imo, although Salamanca is beautiful.

Captain... Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 First question is why Bilbao? It's an ok city but nothing really special. Weather wise I was there in July and it had hot days and overcast days, it is by the coast and exposed to the Atlantic so that keeps the temp down. It is also not true to say the rain in Spain falls mainly in the plane, it falls mainly in the north of Spain, which is why it is so green and has some big ol' rivers good for fishing. San Sebastián is a beautiful beach city about an hour east of Bilbao, but my favourite place in that region is Pamplona, I lived there for a year and it was incredible only downside was no direct flights but otherwise it was one of the nicest, safest and most interesting places I had lived.
ousefox Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 Agree with Bilbao not being anything amazing. I'd also add Burgos a place worth visiting that's relatively close and has a lot to offer.
Captain... Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 Hang on, wasn't the OP asking about TEFL a few weeks ago, living in Bilbao could be very interesting, it is on the up. It's traditionally a massive port city with a lot of trade coming through it and industry round and about. It probably has the most disappointing old quarter of the cities around there I have visited, but the shopping part is very big and modern. It is probably where Liverpool was about 15-20 years ago starting to redevelop but still quite depressing and poor. It wouldn't be top of my list of places to do Tefl, but I would imagine if you lived there you would find lots of amazing places, also has a great little music festival every July, 3 days of live music on the top of a hill looking over the city at a very reasonable price, Muse headlined this year and were awesome. It has a very strong basque culture which can be interesting at times but also there are sometimes political overtones that lead to tension. It is very easy to get to and despite not having its own beach there are some fantastic beaches nearby and plenty of mountains and countryside to explore.

I'm researching cities to teach English in and Bilbao was recommended as a relatively under-served market with a good rate of pay, albeit a higher cost of living than say, Prague. The problem with being an English teacher is that you typically spend a big portion of your day running around the city. Last thing I want is to spend 3 hours a day crammed on sweltering bus and dripping in sweat. I'll have to give Pamplona a look-see.

Ha, posted that just as I was typing my last comment. Yes, looking to tefl there. So not the same criteria as a holiday, but the concern about the weather still applies.
