A PC question

Call me daft if you like. But I always wondered how lap tops are connected to the internet. What I mean is how do you pay for the connection? PC's go via a cable/telephone line but if a lap top is run on battery you cannot do this. I wouldn't mind one but the cost worries me. I'd think about getting one if it was reasoable to run. I wouldn't want a high tech one. An old cheapo model would do to start with. So if anyone has one in working order they want to dispose of I may be interested.

you get a cable that plugs into your phoneline which i had when i was in Halls at Uni now i have it set up on Wireless!

Same as a normal pc Hop. Through a telephone line.

Can of course set it up through fixed line broadband, wireless etc.

You can get a wireless connection for laptops and just have a reuter type thing. Look in the argos catalogue, explains it there quite well.

You can just have a normal connection just like a desktop if you indoors but if you outdoors then you can get a connection wireless, but not sure what signals are like etc! Mainly used in london though.

The cost of laptops has plummeted over recent years. Look at

Aries or Nextday for some examples of sub-£600 machines.

As said above, you can connect a laptop to your cable/phone line just like a conventional desktop PC. If you already have a PC in the house, you can "share" an internet connection by using a wireless network card in the laptop and a wireless router/modem connected to your PC.

If you want remote internet access on a laptop away from home, you're looking at using a laptop with a wireless network card in an area (train, cafe etc) with wireless network access, or by using your mobile phone to make an internet connection. Beyond my capabilities - but someone here will probably have done it? :)

Thanks for the help. I can't really connect to the telephone line when at work. The clients won't be pleased with the increased bill. lol Not every place hase a tel socket though. I shall only use it really to come here and other messageboards so the cost of all the extras might not be worth it.

I was just curious to know if there was a way to take one to work and browse the web cheaply.

I think some mobile phone operators have tariffs/packages for connecting remotely to a laptop. Not really sure though, and to be honest, it sounds a bit O.T.T for your uses?

Laptops are great to be fair, im typing this now on mine that fantastic Mr Deathside (come back dude!) fixed for me. Its an acer and was reasonably priced but it does everything I require it to do. The price jumps up when you start going into wireless terratory like Scarby and Rob.

Yeh you buy minutes from operators but it aint cheap about £1 an hour ok if your on business and the firm is picking up the tab but pricey if your paying for it yourself.

Also you have to be in a hot spot to connect in this way ie Hotels/Airports/Starbucks,you can actually buy the minutes from selected Starbucks

Laptops are great - I'm on one too, but going wireless isn't expensive. You can get a basic laptop for under £500 these days - add a wireless network card to your lappy for £15, get a Belkin router/modem thingy for a few quid more and you're emailing in front Hollyoaks sans wires before you know it. Bob's yer auntie. :)

I stand corrected then, tis as simple as that ay? Robert is indeed your mothers brother in that case. :D

Simple, cheap but sometimes fiddly.

Mrs NW refers to me in a similar manner.

Saw one in Dixons and got me thinking. Just over 600 and XP and a case and printer included. I thought Yes, very reasonable but what are the running costs. It had a DVD drive as well so I could watch my DVD's. Bit expensive just for that though. lol Can't see the point of having one at home as I'm the only one that uses a PC. Maybe if the cost was the same as my PC with Broadband then I could get rid of my PC saving space and having a mobile PC. Just throwing ideas in the air.

Well Laptops are certainly easier to throw than desktops, although you do get more bits with the desktop ;)

The cheapest way (actually free) would be for you to use the internet through their LAN (if your customers already have an internal computer network and internet access). There are some security issues, but they can be overcome...

Some information that is quite interesting:

Only 17% of laptop users only use wi-fi in the UK. Despite all the antennas and connection hot-spots in the UK, and London especially, businessmen dont see why they should use it and some dont know how to use it!

There we are, some useless information which i found a bit surprising tbh. Thought loads of people would use it!

THEY don't want you to know that.

I use my laptop at work, and eject it from the workstation. I then just plug it into my phone line at home and use btopenworld to connect to the internet.

When I am in N Ireland on business, I can connect it to the hotel phoneline, and because BTOpenworld is a freephone number, I can connect anywhere in the UK.

Lappies are the way to go! Cheap too...

That means that you have a docking station at work, right?

Yeah, laptops are good... unless you have secret stuff on them and forget them in a London taxi :D

I think it'll catch on a big way over the next 12 months.

I think some people might be put off public wi-fi by the perceived security risk, though. If you're not firewall-ed up, you may as well empty the contents of your briefcase on the floor, pass your diary around Starbucks and pull your trousers down while your doing it.

For all the warnings, people still don't click about using t'internet safely. Phishing, attachments, firewalls etc...
