NO DRINKWATER

But surely one you've got to take? This isn't a beckham or Rooney scenario where he has been rushed back, he's completed a good amount of games since recovering and is the best player we have in that position.

Surely the question we should be asking is why we are taking some of the other players, if Wiltshire gets injured cest la vie we have people to fit in but surely we should be trying to play him if he's back fit regardless of how long he has been out.

He's played what, 10 minute cameo for the first game back then an hour in two more games before being named in the provisional squad? Not what I'd call a good amount.

Played two reserve games before that and was named in the provisional squad to observe and improve his fitness which he has proved, in effect, he's been back training and playing competitive games of varying levels for 2 months now. He'd be in my squad anyway, struggled that he has he is one of the few players we have with a bit of genuine talent

Serious question for a few people. Do you actually thing Danny Drinkwater is a better player than Jack Wilshire? ( please reframe from bringing the other midfielders we are taking into the discussions I'm not saying DD shouldn't be going I'm just amazed so few people are willing to take a gamble on genuinely talented midfielder just because he HAS been injured)

Last season I thought Wilshere was possibly the best young midfielder in the country. He can hold the ball and has the ability to shield it, run with it and unlock defences. Finally I thought we'd brought through a central midfielder who we could build a team around.

Then he went and got injured...again...and this time not a knock or a niggle but a serious enough injury to put him out of the game for months. Either it's how he plays (like Owen..the little bursts that put huge strain on the hammys) or its a physiological problem...but I wonder whether injuries will actually blight Wilshere's whole career.

So yes, I think taking him IS a risk. Didn't we take Owen to a world cup when he went out injured in the first game?

It's also a risk at the expense of Drinkwater who has played all season, is possibly the fittest he's ever been and has been ever present in a team that has just won the league at a canter.

Is it a risk worth taking? I guess we'll see. Personally it would be no shock to me whatsoever if Wilshere pulls up with something in the first game or two and is then sidelined for the rest of the tournament. With Drinkwater, that gamble would be less.
