A long shot but I'm in Italy next weekend so was planning to go see Hellas Verona v Latina on Saturday on the opening weekend of Serie B.  Has anyone been to a game there before and have any tips?  I even emailed Tim Parks who wrote "A Season with Verona" and got a very generous reply but he hasn't been for years!

I haven't been to a game there but I did up the road in Bergamo. Take some ID with you when buying and entering the stadium, tickets will go on sale about 2 weeks before the match.

Verona is a stunning little city so you will enjoy it.

I went to Verona vs Palermo a couple of months back and managed to get tickets on the afternoon of the game so you shouldn't have problems getting them for a Serie B match.

Verona's a lovely city as said above, there's a pizzeria called Bella Napoli which is run by folks from the Mezzogiorno as the name suggests, great authentic pizza and cheap beer.

If you have time in Verona, the region of Trentino and Alto Adige just north is stunning, or you could go south to Mantova which is a very nice city.

Thank you all - what a great forum this is.

My hotel has sorted my ticket (gone 50 euro posh as an Indian fan I'm not sure I could risk the Ultra Curva's).  Will post a review after the game.

Thanks again.  Football is wonderful!

Maybe a good idea. Hellas Verona are quite notorious on that front.

Fortunately my skin tone is more Med than Indian so I can normally get away with it - yep have read up on the ultras and the fascism but interestingly the roots were in left wing student politics.  Not sure I'm going to raise that if I'm getting a kicking!

Hi All,

well that was brilliant.  I was staying in Sirimione on the south shore of Lake Garda - got the hotel to arrange a car to take me there and back and unbelievably the driver convinced the Police I was a non-Italian speaking VIP so I was driven to the gate entrance and she was waiting with door open right outside post final whistle.  Amazing!  Would never happen here!

Anyway got there as a result an hour ahead of kick off so walked around (single Asian male but nothing but help and friendliness).  Had 2 beers and bought my son a knock off Hellas t-shirt (official club shop a trailer behind a fence but v limited choice).

In my seat for 8:15 for  an 8:30 kick off.  Crumbling stadium with a running track but decent crowd and very good noise from Sud Curva - Latina confined to top north east corner as seems the norm in Spain/Italy when the game would have benefitted from them being closer and louder.

Hellas won 4:1 - there was no diving, no moaning at the ref in excess and excellent sportsmanship throughout.  It put our Prem to shame and revealed to me (as other games have done overseas) that we are arrogantly complacent - our Prem league leads the world in its cynicism and if I hear one more UK commentator speaking about foreign players diving etc .... We could learn a lot when we stop sneering.

Well, that is interesting, glad you enjoyed it. Hellas have had a chequered past but should be back out of Serie B soonish.

I think you were lucky on the diving and sportsmanship front. I go to a lot of Serie A matches and, er, trust me, the English game can't compete on that front. There is even the phrase in Italian about arbitraggio inglese when the ref waves play on and uses his whistle as little as possible. Which is not often seen as a good thing (when you're losing).

However on the plus side, the girls are much fitter, the people are better dressed and the flags fireworks and atmosphere are pretty good. Well, at Genoa at least!
