Sure there are some of you that ride them. My journey to work when I start at 9 annoys me so im thinking of bikes. Next prob I don't even know where to start. Do I need the gear and bike first? Where is best to learn? most id want is 600cc something that might sound nice :) Will I be better having a ped for 6 months to break myself in?

You can either take your CBT and ride a 125 cc max for 2 years before getting a full licence, or take a direct access course (if you're over 24) and get the full licence that way.

I think mods will move this to one of the other two threads on bikes.

But until then - how old are you and what licence do you have - whats your financial situation and do you want to ride a bike all year round..... Are just questions for starters....

Got an SV650s. Rode it to work most days however i've got a new job now which is literally 5 minutes down the road, so it's turned more into a toy to play with.

Get a decent helmet, boots, gloves and I'd probably recommend some armoured textile jacket and trousers and do the CBT. The 125's aren't fast but you'll soon realise how much you love motorbikes.

I'm not completely upto scratch on the new restricted laws for younger licensed riders (used to be pass test - no more than 33bhp for 2 years then unrestricted) and I think there's 2 phases now, the higher being under 50bhp. But if you're old enough and can do a direct test take that because then you don't have to faff around with having a small bike or restrictor fitted. Probably best to have a few months on a 125 through the winter as you learn about different hazardous road surfaces. You have to dodge wet manhole covers, leaves, stones, potholes, diesel spills (!!!) - there's a lot to think about that you don't need to in a car. Breaking distances in the wet are much longer and ice is an absolute no-no

125s are absolute dirt cheap to run, tax, insure and won't land you in trouble so it's  a good starting point. When you do pass your test I'd recommend either a non-sports bike or if you go sporty, no more than 600cc. As tempting as it is to have an R1 at the first opportunity the litre sports bikes are absolutely mental, even older ones!

Thanx for the info peeps. I'm 35 and a bus driver so pretty sensible when driving. My plan is to only use a bike if it's dry as I like my roof on my car to much if it's raining haha. My gf isn't very fond of the idea but a 15-20 min drive for a 5am start turns into a 30 min upwards if I start at 9 grrrr
