Homophobia in football

I did't know him at all one of the others did, he was playing on the other side of the pitch to me I barely noticed him apart from the fact he was constantly stood on the keepers toes during Corners lol  someone mentioned he was openly gay in the pub.

It's not the norm, I could probably count the players I've knowingly played against on one hand we are talking hundreds of games involving 15 lads at a time, certainly never played with anyone I've even had a suspicion about bottling it up but then it's not always obvious someone is keeping something like that to themselves.

EDIT: Also had a female referee lol a very 2016 game of Sunday football.

It's just interesting that someone would feel the need to mention it in the pub, it shouldn't matter at all or be of any real relevance, he has zero impact on your life but people will discuss it even if it was in a completely neutral or even positive. I'm not judging your team mate here for bringing it up, unless he was taking the piss, and in someways the gay player would probably prefer that everyone knew he was gay and it wasn't some weird half secret.

He was directly telling someone else not me I just herd it, I think the person in question may have known this lad from a different club I dunno. It was a pretty much "He's gay you know", a raise of the eyebrows, an "Oh" and that was that. As I say, it's not something you see a lot of in football that's why it was mentioned, it's out of the ordinary.

Certainly no piss taking but I am quite sure there would be plenty who would do (behind his back anyway, doubt they'd risk the red card on the pitch) there is the odd knuckle head playing lower league football who havesn't even got past 1960's esque out and out racism yet.

It exists a lot in the lower leagues and non-leagues. I used to watch a lot of non-league football and the kind of racist, sexist and homophobic abuse that goes on is incredible.

It's a non issue here in the States, had some footballer who plays for the La Galaxy named Robbie something come out a couple years ago, it was news for about a week then died off.

On another note; if we lose today then I will definitely develop a case of 'Awayophobia'.

Really? What about the absolute shit storm that was Michael Sam coming out before being drafted in the NFL...

Had to look him up mate I honestly don't remember him. Don't look like he made too much of a splash, just a footnote really. Then again it is the NFL, a different kettle of fish really cuz you know it's a real mans sport.

Are those people actually watching regular football too, these days? I'd thought it was a bit of a different demographic...

As far as I recall he made no impact in the NFL in football terms(He was drafted 249 of 256, never made it beyond a practice squad and now plays CFL), but there was loads of press about him being the first openly gay player.
