Thracian Posted 7 October 2005 Share Posted 7 October 2005 Don't know quite why you were so interested in my view, or what you expected, but here goes for what it's worth. Q1: Male. Q2: 50+ Q3: Self-employed Q4: No (but I'm spiritually Christian) Q5: All sports Q6: Mens and occasionally mixed. Q7: Doesn't bother me. Q8: No. I think it is alien for most men to hurt women and the possibility of doing so would make them feel uncomfortable. No objection to women competing among themselves in contact sports: rugby, boxing, football etc. Q9: Don't understand how women can be selected to represent country in a "mens match". If the team is open to anyone then no problem. Q10: Hard to imagine but I'd never say never. Perhaps strangely, I regret the assault by women on such things as Gentleman's Clubs (just as much as I imagine most women would object to men imposing themselves on, for example, the Womens Institute) but I have no hang ups about competing against women in sport, encouraging them or, indeed, playing with them. We have a few women play in our supposedly mens club golf competitions and truthfully, I avoid em, because they are such lousy players and are so laboriously slow (which, to me, is probably worse). If they were any good and would move a bit more quickly I would happily play them. But then I feel the same about men. In my experience, competing against women is no different to competing with men. It was my memorable experience to play against Lisa Opie when she was World Ladies squash champion and the truth is she would have beaten me had she not started swearing so much and getting so objectionable as I hauled the score back to 2-all. I was utterly knackered but her verbals were just enough to make me say sod the discomfort and put everything I'd got left into the fifth. But make no mistake... top level sportswomen are exceptionally good and need treating with respect and with proper thought from the off. I don't THINK I was any more motivated because Lisa was a woman although, when, as a novice I lost to the Cambridgeshire Womens Champion I do remember retaining my dignity, shaking her hand with a smile, and resolving that such a thing would NEVER happen again. But, again, that was often my response to defeat even against men although, regrettably, it didn't always work!!!. Later I became coach to the Cambridge girl and to a number of womens county and international players who I would match up against men as often as I could because it helped make them better players more quickly. Generally too, the guys were more than happy to help. As a spectator, I've found myself pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy watching top quality womens sport, particularly the golf and tennis where they natually excel and, in many cases, produce some extraordinarily entertaining contests. If women enjoy and are prepared to take the risks involved with contact sports I don't see any problem (it's their free choice) although I don't realistically see women competiting with men in contact sports (they have the bravery but generally not the strength). However, if a woman were so good at her sport that she needed to play in mens events to keep improving, then why not? In some ways it adds to the interest. But no concessions. I guess that counts as a contact sport? Also, no one is stopping me and my mate playing 5-a-side in otherwise mens teams... PS: "should women be allowed to" - this phrase sounds a little condescending. Would suggest coming up with something more neutral before using this questionnaire more widely.
