Not sure whether it's PC to laugh at this but it did make me chuckle, The guy looks really keen.

Barnsley couple say they're excited to discover whether the NASA Nancy Grace Roman telescope will widen our understanding of dark matter and dark energy and how that understanding might challenge Einstein's theory of the universe.

Perhaps that delightful Barnsley couple, having read the BBC article, will have spotted that it fails to mention exactly where the new telescope will be parked in space. However, they'll doubtless have realised that it'll be positioned at L2, the second Sun-Earth Lagrange Point.

A British-built 'iron horse' rides New Jersey's rails

September 15th, 1831: Built in Newcastle, England, and shipped to the US for use on New Jersey's first railway, the John Bull steam locomotive takes its inaugural run. Exactly 150 years later it'll make an exhibition run in Washington, DC, becoming the world's oldest still-operable steam locomotive.

Unpopular opinion:

Space is a global commons, should be explored as such, and before US and Chinese (or any other third party) get involved in a pissing contest, whoever the US President is should do what JFK did with Khruschev; suggest a joint Moon (and then possibly Mars) mission. (Khruschev was on the verge of accepting too, and I reckon the Chinese would do likewise.)

Combine resources, save time and place feet out there for all mankind in the truest sense, not just for empty words backed by nationalism.

Bringing this back to the fore because the Chinese certainly seem open to the idea. But it seems like it would take the next (Democratic) President of the US to suggest it.

Been reading up on the "Dark Forest" (or "Reaper", if you will) solution to the Fermi Paradox.

This is, apparently, the idea that advanced civilisations exist out there, but deliberately either destroy other nascent ones out of fear of being destroyed themselves, or stay quiet out of fear of same.

Personally, I reckon that's applying values that are far too human to species that might have a completely different value structure, but it is interesting.

"You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it"  and "your words are as empty as your future" remain two of the coldest villain lines ever spoken IMO.
