Nothing to be proud of, with such a talented and expensively assembled squad we should be setting our sights much higher than this.

Obviously I'm pleased we've got to 40 after our recent struggles, but this league season is a bit of a write off if we don't at least get into Europe by finishing 7th. Finishing behind Burnley would be acutely embarrassing for me considering they hadn't won in 3 months prior to last week.

I was for appointing Shakey, but concede now this was a terrible mistake. I'm intrigued by what Puel intends to do here but wouldn't be surprised if he got the boot at the end of the season if we tail off and go out of the cup.

Agree. This just wanting to survive attitude is what did for Newcastle and Aston Villa a couple of years ago, and Sunderland last season.

So frustrating that we could easily be 6th though were it not for some poor home performances. Wasn't that an issue with Puel at Southampton in that they were better away from home?

Hindsight's 20/20. I share some of the frustration, looking back, we could've earned quite a decent amount of additional points on the board, if it hadn't been for some poor performances - and that against the "weaker" teams (Stoke, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth).

Having said that, to be on 40 points now and still within reach of 6th spot says a lot about the standard and quality of play with all the Top Five sides at present.

We should be aiming at 7th spot, and maybe try and put some pressure on Arsenal if we can. A 6th place finish is possible, but not that likely in my eyes.

I honestly don’t think we’re going to catch Arsenal. They seem to have a fairly easy run in and usually finish strongly, so wouldn’t be surprised if they finished on 60 points or more.

One things for certain had Shakespeare stayed we wouldnt be 8th. Imo we would be in the bottom 6. Puel deserves alot of credit for getting us where we are. I just hope he's given the summer to get who he wants in.

Funnily enough, we actually hit the 40 point mark with a win at West Brom last season as well. But there were only four games after that and we ended up with 44.

We have eight games left now and should get to at least 50, which would be a more than acceptable return given where we were when Puel took over.
