It may reset the wage issue but we will still have to purchase players to replace those that will leave for free. I wouldn't like to guess how much 9 players capable of playing in the Premier League will cost, but F#rest may have an idea, and of course that expenditure will also fall under the FFP microscope.

Some of them, yeah. Not all. Bertrand and Hamza for a start wouldn't need replacing.

Recruitment is key to us, it has to be right and it has to be young Hungary players with sell on value.

Somebody made the decision to change and the are culpable

The more time goes on the more daft last summer actually looks. When you think that we put down our highest net spend I think ever in a summer and we ended up producing that off the back of it, adding to the already existing problems that were being built up. I think any club that has itself in this kind of position in the summer is not well run. If this was Everton or Aston Villa this place would shred them for it.

Recruitment, good or bad, often really shows in the coming years rather than immediately. What we are seeing here is a regression of our recruitment over the last 2/3 years that's coming home to roost, and we've so far this summer been able to do absolutely nothing to fix it. I don't think we'll get relegated as such but I do expect the likes of Brighton and Palace to overtake us in the next couple of years. Brighton particularly feel like they've got in place what we thought we had. The way they've just replaced Bissouma before anyone even realised it.

I suppose what you do have to say is at least we did get a trophy in the process.

So we don’t have the money to buy the players we want AND pay the dross to kick their heels. It’s a money problem not a numbers problem.

Do people seriously think that if the money was there, we wouldn’t just go and get a sodding winger, even if that meant Hamza Choudhury kicking his heels for a year. Especially when it’s about £3m per position in prize money.

If it was a numbers problem you could loan them out for a pittance and take the hit on wages. So again, it’s a money problem.

So yes, selling assets could solve it, after all every player is an asset and that’s what we actively want to do.

Most things with football out money problems, the more interesting aspect is why?

What are the drives for thr money issues, is it?

1) Owner is skint.

2) Owner losing interest.

3) FFP

4) Owner wants more value for money, not happy with how his money is being invested and has told them to sort out the crap, before he puts his hand in his pocket.

Hopefully it is 3 or 4.

They’ve said a bundle of times they want us to be sustainable. It’s a combination of covid, ffp, the infrastructure projects, poor signings (after all of Rodgers hadn’t bought shite he wouldn’t need to buy loads more players).

A pretty good chunk of our debt is owed to the owner (I’d imagine most of that would be forgiven or financed on very agreeable terms) so I don’t think we can say he’s losing interest, and he’s definitely not skint.

We took a few gambles, they didn’t work out and now we’re out of Europe and need to clear up the squad. Would rather settle this now while we have a solid core of players and fewer games to play, and do this ahead of what will be a major overhaul by default next summer.

We have a young French defender who will eventually fetch us a huge transfer fee. This season might not be so inspiring but we’ll be fine. And, who knows, maybe another cup run is on the cards for us?
