Log Burners...

Neighbour of my parents cut down a big tree last year in November. Took me days bringing it to my house in the car, properly prepping it all for many hours afterwards and I've been drying the wood since and got each sized cut piece down to an average 12.5% moisture level, so really chuffed I've dried it well.  Copious amounts available, perfect condition to burn and love that it warms the whole house categorically reducing my gas usage by a considerable amount.

Just a case of deciding my first day lighting.  Big event in our home, but I'm holding on I think until Sunday 19th November, maybe even the following weekend.  Just got a feeling this winter might be a colder one so not going to go too early this year.

I'll be using the wood burner 6 days a week from then on, anticipate I'll be burning until at least Mid/late March.

Literally can't wait.  The whole family loves it, just makes the house so warm (hand rub)!!!

Haha, I didn’t think I’d find anyone as enthusiastic as me about firewood. I moved into a new property last year with a 3 acre garden/woodland and set about clearing some neglected areas. I took down and logged more than 11 tonnes of hardwood, split and stacked for 12 months outdoors and just moved it all into a barn to have another 12 months. Already have 3 tonnes from previous house seasoned for 3 years which I’m using now. Not had the heat pump on at all yet.

Had mine on for about a month solid at this point, how are you waiting that long.

If you re-read what I said it isn't related to how solid (ready) my stock is.  Its plentiful, its nice and low moisture levels.  Its because I think we'll have a colder winter.  Just my own hunch, nothing scientific, but as such I would then clearly burn through a larger amount of my stock, quicker in a harder winter.

Hence the delay in burn day one.

That’s exactly how I read it

Because I will use more in a shorter time, so choosing to hold on a few days longer, couple of weeks compared to last year, to balance (my hunch) higher usage, over a slightly shorter timeframe.

You asked how am I waiting that long. Presume this is my answer.

Our house had an open fire, used it for years but a couple of years ago, realising coal was going to be a dead duck moving forward, we decided to get a wood burner. Since then its basically been a mini hobby collecting as much wood as we can, using my own garden for decent resource as well and the whole cutting/drying process thereafter.

For example we have a huge laurel hedge, part of it we cut back this summer.  Its now fully cut up, drying inside our airing shelves in anticipation of winter 2024.  Laurel is bad in an open fire (arsenic) , but fine in an enclosed burner as long as properly dried out.  This wood will be drying for 18 months.....

Personally for me, its just the sheer heat it brings for the house.  Like I say everyone loves it in our house and who doesn't want to be warm in the winter?

I'm sat in shorts most nights!!!! Love it!!!
