I fitted a nice logburner a couple of months ago.

I've been picking up fallen branches and cutting them up and burning them!... They seem to be fine and burn well.

I know about buying 'seasoned ' wood, which we've also done, but it's pretty expensive and doesn't seem to burn any different?

Any views on what to burn is appreciated.

I think burning unseasoned wood is actually illegal now :D It will probably also screw up your system a lot quicker than burning dry wood.

Take the hit and buy a builders bag of logs and the relative price isn't actually too bad

The difference is that seasoned wood burns hotter because it doesn't need it's heat to dry moisture out.

Terrible advice. Never buy wood!

If you get a thermometer, you chimney will be 200 degrees hotter with seasoned hardwood rather than unseasoned softwood. How they look when they burn isn't much different, though lighting a fire with proper kindling is a doddle compared to twigs from the garden.

Best source of free wood assuming you don't know a tree surgeon are builders. I've just picked up a load of 100 year old 7"x4" joists, they are softwood but really dense. Modern construction softwood burns easily but quickly, as do pallets which are easy to get hold of.

Type free wood into Facebook works, there is also a group that shares the location of free wood.

I suspect the particulates are the reason this is illegal and create a health hazard if not for the user then the local populace.  I apologise in advance if this is wrong. I would hope none of us want to put others at risk

You're absolutely right. Also, @yorkie1999 asks who'll find out? Well, the house holder will when he has a chimney fire caused by all the creosote created in his chimney from burning wet/damp wood.

Friends of Schwarzwald fellers & forst(foresters)…Twigs, small branches new, causes more problems to new chimmnies and specifications.Must be dry.Ok for starting fire  (UK might be different)..Old house beams excellent.OBI and others do specialised woods. Builders woods good port of call,

depends where you live for prices.

Foresters:- often shortfall in the country, due to supply + demand.Annd may need

storing for next year…Some Foresters keep wood sales back, for next years use, unless buyers have their own dry store.. Farmer communities mainly.

Burning wood ain’t as easy nor cheap as it used to be…

Or emigrate to Scandinavia,USA, Or Canada backwoods..:)

Pick up wood by all means @weller54, but store it for a year…

It’s pretty grim for the environment to burn unseasoned logs…. Don’t do it!

I got two ton bags for £120, so it’s hardly a fortune !

I chopped down an apple tree in my garden this summer, but won’t touch it until next winter

I work for a company that supplies these, sales are up over 300% compared to last year and we cannot get stock quick enough. Another 600 due by the end of the month and nearly all gone already.......Greta Thunburg will be having a fit

She shouldn't. Wood is a carbon neutral energy source.

This is what I don't quite understand...

The branches I'm finding have clearly been 'off the tree ' for sometime...so why do I have to wait a year or two to burn them??... haven't they already been 'seasoned '?

For wood to dry it depends partially on the type of wood, and partially on the time the wood is cut. Ideally if you cut wood, you want to do so in winter, when the sap is out of the wood. You want to split the wood, it will help it dry. Now, for 'found branches' they can be wet or dry depending on the type of wood. Birch for instance will practically never dry unsplit with bark on. The bark keeps the moisture in.If you heat with wet wood, you can end up with a sooty chimney, that could be a fire hazard.

Thanks...I brought the 'Fireline' logburner off a lady on FB marketplace.. she'd only had it installed for 3 months but didn't like the dust and mess it made... paid £360 for it... got 11 metre chimney liner, brand new for £40!..got someone to fit that for £120... fitted everything else up myself, chimney register plate etc.... total £650!!   Was getting crazy quotes to fit it...£2000 ish!!

It's not rocket science FFS 😂

Glad I got mine installed in May. I buy my wood inn bulk from white horse energy I think they are called.

Tried to stock up over the summer as I expected the price to rocket up.
