He played in the first Leicester game I went to, vs Bury in the 1975/76 FA Cup. I was 10, it was freezing, we won 1-0 with a Bob Lee goal and I was hooked forever. My Fever Pitch moment. He was a character and best wishes to his Fam.

Garland came to us during our poor 74/75 season, and his goals arguably saved us from getting relegated that season.

I have a little story from that time, that maybe gives an insight into what a good guy he was.

Garland came in and immediatly started scoring goals, including a hat trick against Wolves in our 3-2 win at home.

One of the midlands tv channels, came to the City training ground, to do a spotlight piece on Garland to talk about his good form, and the impact he was having one Friday during training.

Well my brother and his mate were also at the training ground collecting the players autographs at the time.

Upon seeing the camera man and interviewer setting up to do the interview with Garland, they decided they would stand behind Garland while he was being interviewed, in order to get on the tv, which they knew would be shown during the sport section of that evenings midlands news.

Well the interviewer wasnt happy, and basically told them to sod off, but then Garland piped up, and told the interviewer, that unless the lads were allowed to stand behind him during the interview, then he wouldnt do the interview.

So thanks to Garland they were allowed to stand behind him, and did indeed make it on to the tv that evening.

Thanks for posting.
I remember that game very well. I was in the Kop, most probably with a LCFC silk tied to my wrist :scarf: and wearing flares, (and for our ‘younger viewers’ they were a type of trouser and not pyrotechnics). :D

He was pure class. Just as I remember him in that clip. Worthing withworth rofe Earle Samels wollett blockley etc were also special. Just shows that great teams come and go. Should give the young ones hope for the future in this difficult period. The constant being the club, its culture and the support of the fans.

Another team that should never have been near relegation…

I think 74/75 there was a bit of a hangover from missing out in the FA Cup Semi with Liverpool.

Shilton wanted out, and got a move to Stoke, and what year was it that Weller went on strike, and wanted a transfer?

Things just werent right 74/75, and i think it took Garland, plus a realisation that we might just go down, to shake them up.

We had a really good season 75/76, finished 7th after a slow start when we drew too many, and all those draws probably cost us a place in Europe at the end of the season.

76/77 season, we was in with a realistic chance of Europe with about 10 games to go, but got hammered at home by West Brom, and thats when some of our fans started getting restless if my memory serves me right.

I remember the Leeds home game, last match of that season, played on a week night, and it was a really poor attendance, and i can still remember the Bloomfield out chants.

I just think fans felt were frustrated at having such a good side, but just not quite achieving what a lot of us felt we were capable of.

Enter Frank McClintock, (Thought to be the fans choice!) and the break up of a good side, the introduction of some awful players, and a dismal season, where we pretty much all knew we would be relegated by the time we got to Christmas.

In the days when you got cards with pictures on the front and stats on the back (from packets of bubble gum if I recall correctly) I remember that I had a card with Chris Garland on it, sporting his magnificent barnet.

RIP.

Chris Garland was part of the team that I 1st remember as a supporter. Brilliant memories of the Bloomfield era. Such a great time, we played some great football under Bloomfield

Might be wrong about this and I can't be bothered to research it. But I'm pretty sure I was there at his home debut against West Ham, night game and he scored twice. He was a good player of his time. RIP Chris lad.
