Delighted. It’ll be 6-12 months for the appeal to play out but then I can put a full stop on watching top level club football. It was a relief to give up my season ticket this summer after Top & Rudkin destroyed my love for the club. I’d naively hoped I could still enjoy PL football but I just can’t. The PL is and has been corrupt for years and a competition without a level playing field isn’t worth watching. Unfortunately for people like me, who’d like to enjoy international football on that basis, Infantino is doing his best to ruin that too. Because I’ve always loved the game, I’ll continue to watch Leagues One & Two & National League games for a while. Probably not for much longer. Good job I enjoy cricket, athletics & tennis…

Most of the posts above have a point. Not the Porto away 5-0: I was there and it was our second string in a meaningless match against their first team. But I’d like to offer a different take. Not one match but a sequence. I’d offer the 2021-22 Europa League group stage, from which we should have qualified comfortably. Instead, we won two of 6 matches (remember the Patson Daka game?) before losing the final game in Naples while Spartak beat Legia to condemn us to the Conference. We were among the 2 or 3 favourites to win the Europa, and only Roma offered serious opposition in the Conference. A gigantic underperformance against expectations. Legia away was a truly pitiful performance too.

Value for money isn’t quite the same yardstick as ‘worst ever signing’, and I’ll grant he comes into the picture when looked at through that lens. But some truly atrocious purchases spring to mind: Akinbiyi, Wise, Matt Mills, Ward, Kristiansen…

Well, I envy you your youth. Leaving aside the fact that there’s no such thing as an official worst signing, Skippy wouldn’t be in the worst ten of all time. I don’t rate him, there’s nothing he’s especially good at, but he’s not terrible nor worth hating. Who is?

Dare I say I like that? Aluko & Thomas can’t be worse (can they? Oh, they can) than Souttar & Okoli. A debut as captain is a thing too.

The January window when our only signing was Ryan Bennett on loan. We were comfortably among the 4 best teams in the league, but with a smaller squad than our rivals. We ran out of steam and finished 5th. A couple of decent signings - not world beaters, but players of a Demari Gray or Danny Amartey standard - would have kept us top 4. And the rest, as they say, is history...
