This is the breathtaking Lighthouse of the Jument, a lone guardian in the Atlantic off the coast of Brittany, France. Built in 1911, it stands on a rocky islet known as Ar-Gazec, where the raging waves of the ocean crash with force during storms. This lighthouse became famous thanks to an iconic photograph by Jean Guichard, who captured a monumental wave enveloping the structure while the lighthouse remained in the gate. In the late 1600s, in response to the Great Fire of London, chimneys were built much narrower than they were previously. Due to the design, keeping chimneys clean became much more challenging and so, children were employed as chimney sweeps. For over 200 years this practice went on. The small boys used were between 5 - 10 years old, some as young as 4 years of age…

Some people have a romantic view of the past as if it was Downton Abbey. I would guess quite a few of our families were in abject poverty back in early 1900s

Aye even for those lucky enough to find work it wasn't far off slavery not to diminish that as that was inhumane in the extreme.

I'd go further and say that anyone apart from the ruling classes/business owners such as those as in mine and hosiery, were in relative poverty. If the breadwinner had no job, there was nothing to fall back on, other than charitable organisations and some sympathetic benefactors.

 

Thank goodness we have moved on to our current societal situation. As bad as we might think it is.
